Everyone wants to understand the universe. It’s so mysterious and yet so magnificent. So how do understand something so complex? Fortunately, humans have developed a way to unravel the mystery of the universe. It’s none other than Calculus.
Yes, that’s true. Calculus is probably the greatest achievement of mankind. Without calculus, we won’t be able to have smartphones, televisions, and GPS. Without calculus, we would not have been able to reach the moon. I am not saying calculus is everything but calculus played an important role in the invention of many things.
Therefore if you want to understand the universe, you need to know calculus. Richard Feynman used to say, “The language Gods talk” to encourage Wouk, an American writer, to learn calculus.
I got so involved with my work in the last two years that I forgot the joy of mathematics. Mathematics is a key part of many disciplines. Without mathematics, it’s impossible to imagine our lives.
I wanted to rekindle that spark and joy I used to have as a kid. That’s why I decided to learn the history of mathematics. Rather than reading some random articles, I started looking for the books.
That’s when I stumbled upon the book — Infinite Powers: How Calculus Reveals the Secrets of the Universe. I read the reviews and they were good. I found the book quite compelling and bought it.
I am the kind of person who likes to read the hardcopy. I like the smell of new books. Anyway, I read the preface of the book and fell in love. The book is so simple yet so beautiful.
I learned about the origin of calculus. I learned that calculus is not complex but it makes everything simple.
Our obsession with curved surfaces leads to the invention of calculus. Humans were so perplexed about the circle and spheres. We were good with the straight lines and angles but curved surfaces scared us.
Since most things in the universe are curved, it was important to understand curved surfaces. Nobody knew how to calculate the area of the circle or sphere until calculus was invented.
Calculus divides the problems into infinite small problems and then solves the small problems. Then, we put the solution to all small problems together and get the solution to the big problem. That’s how calculus simplifies our lives.
I would encourage everyone to read this book. If you want to understand the universe, you have to learn calculus.
