The Kybalion: Summaries with Action Steps for each Chapter
The Kybalion Hermetic Philosophy: 7 Ancient Egypt Laws, Original 1908 Edition by The Three Initiates
Chapter 1 Summary:
The Kybalion introduces the ancient Hermetic philosophy which aims to reconcile occult knowledge and act as a master key to understand other teachings. The seven Hermetic principles outlined in the book are seen as fundamental truths that underlie all phenomena. Mastering these principles can give one power over one’s environment and mental states.
Action: Study each of the seven Hermetic principles deeply and seek to understand how they apply in your own life and experiences. Look for analogies and real-world examples of the principles at work. With understanding will come the ability to apply the principles intentionally.
Chapter 2 Summary:
The seven Hermetic principles are explained as Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, and Gender. Mentalism states that the All is Mind and the universe is mental. Correspondence states that as above, so below. Vibration states that everything moves, vibrates and circulates. Polarity highlights that everything has two poles. Rhythm explains that everything rises and falls in cycles. Cause and Effect states that nothing escapes the law. Gender refers to the masculine and feminine principles manifest in all planes.
Action: Meditate on each principle to truly internalize and comprehend it. Then identify places in your life where you can consciously apply the principles, whether to regulate your moods, interact with others, or overcome challenges. Start with simple applications and build up your mastery over time.
Chapter 3 Summary:
Mental Transmutation is the ability to transform mental states and conditions. As Mentalism posits that the universe is mental, it follows that the universe can be ruled by mentality. Those who master Mental Transmutation gain a degree of power over their environment and phenomena. The key is to rise above the lower vibrations of the unconscious plane through will, attention and mental concentration.
Action: Select one negative mental state you’d like to transmute, such as fear, anger or insecurity. Polarize your mind on the opposite positive state through concentrated affirmations and visualization. Practice mental exercises daily for at least 30 days to begin building the habit of Mental Transmutation.
Chapter 4 Summary:
The All is the infinite eternal energy and spirit that underlies the universe. It must be unknowable in itself but its operations can be understood through its creations. The All creates universes mentally through meditation and contemplation, a process that takes aeons. Higher beings exist that transcend human comprehension. We must treat the universe as real on a relative level while recognizing its illusory nature from an absolute viewpoint.
Action: Contemplate the immensity and infinity of The All. Appreciate that the universe and all it contains is a mental creation within The All. Let go of identifying too closely with form and separateness, and try to experience a sense of Oneness with The All for at least 5 minutes daily.
Chapter 5 Summary:
The Mental Universe explains that the All creates universes mentally, much like humans form mental images. The All meditates upon the beginning of creation and then gradually awakens, causing evolution to proceed on material, mental and spiritual planes. Higher regions exist with planes of life, beings and powers that surpass human understanding. Still, we are a part of The All and destined to realize our oneness with it over time.
Action: Practice visualization meditations to envision higher planes of existence. Imagine communicating and interacting with advanced beings there. Allow your sense of separateness to begin dissolving as you realize we are all one within The All. Over time, seek to bring this non-dual perspective into your daily life.
Chapter 6 Summary:
The Divine Paradox recognizes that while the universe seems illusory relative to The All, it must still be treated as real on a relative level. The wise reconcile both viewpoints. Half-wisdom ignores one side while wisdom uses higher laws to overcome lower ones. We must avoid magical thinking while still recognizing the Mental Universe. Practically, we must live as if the fleeting world is real while understanding its higher truth.
Action: Practice seeing the world from a non-dual perspective — as both real and unreal, substantial and insubstantial, fleeting and eternal. Notice how this paradoxical viewpoint can help free you from identification with external phenomena. At the same time, engage fully and intentionally in the relative world of form and action.
Chapter 7 Summary:
All is in The All but also The All is in All. Trying to understand The All is futile — we can only comprehend its operations. The All cannot limit, condition or change itself. It creates universes mentally, projecting will towards the feminine principle of “becoming” which then evolves forms. Mystics report being absorbed into The All at the end of cycles. Our individual spirits will expand infinitely over time.
Action: Focus your efforts on self-realization and spiritual growth rather than trying to understand The All. Seek to raise your vibrations and realize your inherent divinity and oneness with The All. Let go of identifying with form and separateness. Practice non-attachment and selfless service. This path will reveal the truth within.
Chapter 8 Summary:
The Planes of Correspondence explains that all seven principles operate and manifest on physical, mental and spiritual planes. Difference in planes arises from differing vibration rates. As above, so below — there is harmony between the planes. On higher planes, masters overcome lower laws by applying higher laws. The forms through which The All manifests are varied yet the underlying principles remain the same.
Action: Contemplate how the seven principles manifest on the different planes — from the grossest matter to the subtlest mind to pure Spirit. Seek to rise above and master the lower planes by alignment with and application of higher spiritual principles and laws. Practice meditation, service, selflessness and other spiritual disciplines.
Chapter 9 Summary:
The Principle of Vibration states that everything moves, vibrates and circulates. The differences between manifestations arise from differing vibration rates. Vibration underlies all forms of matter, energy, mind and even spirit. The higher the vibration, the higher the position in the scale. However, even The All vibrates at an infinite degree of intensity, appearing almost at rest. Advanced beings use vibrations to perform “miracles” by conquering natural phenomena.
Action: Raise your mental and emotional vibrations through meditation, affirmations, visualization and other spiritual practices. Contemplate how all forms are manifestations of different vibration rates. Seek to align your beings with higher vibrations corresponding to peace, love and wisdom. Practice techniques to neutralize or transmute lower vibrations.
Chapter 10 Summary:
The Principle of Polarity explains that everything has two poles. Opposites are the same thing at different degrees. Extremes meet and half-truths reconcile into higher truths. Polarity operates on physical, mental and spiritual phenomena. Masters are able to transpose their polarity at will, manifesting positive qualities while neutralizing negative ones. Everything has its polar opposite, though things cannot be transmuted into entirely different things.
Action: Identify some polarities in your life that you would like to reconcile — e.g. love and hate, courage and fear. Practice visualization, affirmations and will to transpose your polarity from the negative to the positive. Raise your consciousness and consider how from a higher perspective, polarities merge into non-duality and oneness.
Chapter 11 Summary:
The Principle of Rhythm states that everything has cycles of rise and fall, inflow and outflow, high tide and low tide. Even The All manifests rhythm. Masters are able to rise above lower plane rhythms through polarization on the Higher Self. They allow rhythms to pass beneath them while serving on higher planes. While rhythm is indestructible, one can counterbalance it with higher laws. Balance and counterbalance operate on mental as well as physical planes.
Action: Identify some physical or emotional rhythms in your life — mood swings, cycles of productivity and lethargy, periods of abundance and lack. Through will, mental concentration and the principle of polarization, raise your consciousness above these lower plane rhythms. Practice steadfastness, poise and mental firmness. Serve from your Higher Self rather than identify with lower plane fluctuations.
Chapter 12 Summary:
The Principle of Cause and Effect states that nothing escapes the Law, though higher planes of causation can overcome lower ones. Masters are causes that create effects, while most people are blind effects of causes. Masters learn to play the game of life instead of being played. The wise obey higher laws but rule on lower planes. The ALL is the ultimate Law from which all other laws emerge. Even the highest beings are mortal and subject to the Cosmic Processes.
Action: Contemplate how you have been an effect of various causes in your life. Through will, understanding and mastery of higher laws, seek to become a conscious cause within the system. Learn to play the game of life intelligently instead of being moved about like a pawn. Raise your vibrations, purify your intentions and align your will with higher truths to influence your environment wisely.
Chapter 13 Summary:
The Principle of Gender states that the masculine and feminine principles manifest in all planes. Gender refers to the ability to generate and create, not physical sex. Science is discovering that the so-called negative pole is feminine and positive — the mother principle of creation. On the mental plane, the masculine will projects energy towards the feminine, stimulating creation. Masters learn to transpose their mental gender at will, neutralizing negativity while manifesting positive qualities.
Action: Contemplate how the gender principle operates in your own mind, personality and character. Identify areas where you tend to overly identify with either the masculine or feminine principle. Practice strengthening and balancing both within yourself. When negative emotions or mental states arise, seek to transpose your mental gender by applying will, raising your vibrations and polarizing on the opposite positive state. Over time you will develop a healthy balance of both masculine and feminine energies.
Chapter 14 Summary:
The concept of Mental Gender explains many psychic phenomena. The objective masculine mind makes impressions on the subjective feminine mind, giving rise to telepathy, thought transference, suggestion and hypnosis. Most people over-identify with the feminine mind and lack masculine will. Strong individuals are able to impress their thoughts and ideas onto the masses. However, a balanced integration of the masculine and feminine principles within is ideal. Through will and polarization, one can transpose their mental gender at will.
Action: Notice how the mental gender dynamic plays out in your relationships, interactions and environment. When others attempt to impress unwanted thoughts or suggestions onto you, recognize it and refuse to accept the seed. Cultivate a balanced integration of masculine will and feminine receptivity within yourself. Practice mental exercises that strengthen both principles to achieve inner harmony and freedom from external influences.
Chapter 15 Summary:
True hermetic transmutation is a mental art. Knowledge must be accompanied by action and expression to be of value. Those who understand the principle of use gain a degree of mastery over natural forces. The Kybalion advises changing mental states through attention and will, transmuting polarities, neutralizing rhythm, serving on higher planes, playing the game of life intelligently and expressing knowledge into action. True transmutation occurs on the mental plane, illustrating that mind rules over phenomena.
Action: Select one hermetic principle you wish to put into practice. For the next 30 days, take intentional action aligned with that principle. Monitor your progress and note any insights, difficulties or shifts in awareness. Adjust your approach as needed. After 30 days, review your experience and identify one additional hermetic principle to apply in your life going forward.
