Summary

The article discusses the challenge of bridging the gap between knowing what actions are beneficial and actually implementing them, particularly on the Medium platform.

Abstract

The "Knowing-Doing Gap" is a common issue where individuals recognize the necessary steps to achieve their goals but fail to act upon them, often due to perceived difficulties or excuses. The author illustrates this with examples such as working hard, joining a gym, changing jobs, or learning new skills. On Medium, writers are aware that consistent writing, observation, reading, and genuine engagement with the community contribute to success, yet many do not follow through. The article suggests that the primary reason for this inaction is a lack of belief in the importance of these activities for success on Medium. The solution proposed is to prioritize and wholeheartedly commit to these known beneficial actions, thereby narrowing the gap between knowledge and action.

Opinions

  • The author acknowledges the presence of many "I must" statements in life, which provide clarity on necessary actions but are often followed by excuses for inaction.
  • The problem is not a lack of knowledge about what to do but a choice to not do it, coupled with excuses.
  • On Medium, the author admits to sometimes facing the same issue of knowing what to do but not doing it.
  • The author believes that the core reason for not engaging in beneficial activities is the belief that they are not crucial for success on the platform.
  • The author's solution is straightforward: start valuing and consistently performing the actions known to be beneficial, thus reducing the "Knowing-Doing Gap."

The Knowing-Doing Gap — A Medium Perspective

The Problem…The Reason… And the Solution

Photo by Parker Byrd on Unsplash
  • I must work really hard to get my job done
  • I must join a fitness studio to lose weight
  • I must apply for a new job if I don’t like the work I am doing right now
  • I must learn business management skills if I want to start a business

and the list goes on…

There are so many “I must” in our lives, which is a good thing. Because this gives you clarity in your actions.

Very Simple!

Now move to the Problem.

Problem:

The problem starts when we know what we must do to achieve what we want, but we choose otherwise.

Otherwise means we don’t do it and we attach one excuse with that.

For instance, just take the points mentioned at the start of the article.

  • I know I must work really hard to get my job done — but I won’t do it because it is difficult
  • I know I must join a fitness studio to lose weight — but I won’t do it because I don’t have time for it
  • I know I must apply for a new job if I don’t like the work I am doing right now — but I won’t do it because it is not easy to get a new job
  • I know I must learn business management skills if I want to start a business — but I won’t do it because learning a new skill is boring, or for some other reason.

And We just keep maximizing the Knowing-Doing Gap.

So you see now what the problem is? Let us see the case of Medium.

  • We know that it would be really good for our experience and for other people in the community also if we write consistently on Medium
  • We know that if we observe our daily lives, the people we meet every day, and the things we do on daily basis, we can get nice and interesting ideas about our upcoming posts and we can produce quality content here
  • We know that reading articles on Medium is as much important as writing because when we read something, we will have our own thoughts and views about the topic, then maybe we will respond to it, and it will be easier to connect to others
  • We know that we should follow others if we like their work, not just because they will follow us back

and this list also goes on…

As I am a new writer on Medium, So I also face this problem sometimes.

So on Medium, there are many things that we know we must do, but for some reason, we don’t do them.

The Reason:

In my opinion, there is only one reason for not doing the things mentioned above:

We simply don’t think that these things are important to be successful on Medium.

You don’t believe me? Okay let us think together:

  • Writing consistently? — No, I will write only when a perfect idea will come to my mind, and then it will go viral and I will get all my followers in a couple of days and that’s it.
  • Observe everything? — No, I think observing is not important, if I like to write, then quality content will come to my mind anyhow. I don’t need to observe everything.
  • Reading articles on Medium? — Okay reading is good but I can connect to people only by writing also.
  • Follow only if I like the content ?— Yes but then it will take a lot of time for me to get my followers.

The Solution:

There is no big science in the solution and no hidden tricks and it is very simple:

Just start giving importance to every single step mentioned above, and do them wholeheartedly.

And minimize the Knowing-Doing Gap between the things we know we must do on Medium and the things we do on Medium.
