The Joy of Being a Kid
February Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Statues”
“I dare you to get closer!”
So many children do this along the walkway near my home.
It’s not a long drop to the water and rocks below and would probably only result in bumps and bruises. But for a child, the possibility of a fall when standing on the edge would still be thrilling.
They walk, ride, and stand as close as they can to the edge, often with a hand clutching that of a scolding parent.
The sculptor perfectly captured this image of a young girl, arms thrown in the air, standing near the edge as if she were carrying out a dare.
There used to be a statue of a man sitting on one of the seats, legs crossed, reading a newspaper, and I’d love to have shown you that one too.
Except someone stole it. I like to think of him sitting on a chair in someone’s lounge room during a dinner party.
“That? Oh that’s Uncle Edgar, he’s not very friendly.”
