SELF
The Journey of the Higher Self
A free-verse poem on Carl Jung’s Philosophy of ‘Individuation’

I
It is necessary for Man to become an individuated being.
II
Society thwarts him — thrusting him into situations which bring him into disharmony with his true Self. Alas, too much time spent in the society of others leads one to rely too heavily on a social mask that cripples the true Self.
III
Restlessness of the Soul — where one is imprisoned within a false persona. Such a persona is founded upon the approval and opinions of others and the desire to please all but himself.
IV
The cacophony of society — it hinders the birth of the individuated Self. The Self will forever be bound by the shackled environment of others; it will never surpass beyond the limitations of others. In a place where all is dying, the Self will inevitably die too.
V
To cease this disharmony within oneself, one must enter an environment — solitary or social — that allows him to act in accordance with his true Self.
The limitations of others, then, become one’s goals.
