The iPhone 15 Pro Max is a BIG upgrade

I’ll make no intention of hiding the fact that I didn’t have a good experience with the 14 Pro Max. I accept that not everyone experienced the issues I did, though I’m also not alone with them. Battery life was poor, frame-dropping was normal, random widgets disappearing, AirDrop failing, and even an oddity of having to restart my phone when a call dropped.

It was enough to put me off getting a 15 Pro Max, but my devotion of the brand was enough to plow on.

Surprisingly Better

Some have categorically stated that the 15 Pro Max isn’t much of an upgrade compared to the 13 and 14, but I think there’s enough to improve your experience in numerous ways. My 15 Pro Max has been so good, it’s kept my S23 Ultra at bay. And for those of you that know how highly I regard that phone, that’s no small thing.

I wasn’t expecting this much from the iPhone, but here are some ways that justify an upgrade.

Action Button

I’ve heard strong voices that suggest this isn’t much of an upgrade, but the truth is, that very much depends how you use it. If you’re using it as a push-version of the silencer-slider then I guess it’s not much of an upgrade. But when you get creative with Shortcuts, then it can make for a vastly superior experience.

Following a tip from YouTuber AlexGear&Tech, I’ve set up a shortcut that brings me a few options with a long-press of my Action Button. As someone that has gotten used to the efficiencies within Android, this little shortcut has gone a long way to create a hack that delivers pleasure and efficiency.

Weight

The 15 Pro Max features a Titanium body and that results in the device being lighter than its predecessor. Big deal I hear you say, well what I’d say is that when a device feels different in the hand, it feels different in the mind. The lighter weight delivers a different experience so this feels like a different device to its weightier ancestor.

Camera

The 14 Pro Max takes great photos. Lets face it, most flagship smartphones replace any real need for a stand-alone-camera for most people, but there’s enough of an upgrade on the 15 Pro Max to be appreciative of the gains.

Point of note, I’m not a knowledgable photographer, but I do know that the 15 Pro Max has improved zoom capabilities, and captures more accurate skin tones. When you add that to the fact that the 15 Pro Max defaults to 24MP photos rather than 12MP, there’s enough to notice an incremental improvement over your 14.

IOS 17

Yes technically you’re correct, you can have this on iPhone 14, but when you jump from a 14 Pro Max with IOS 16 to a 15 Pro Max with IOS 17, there are enough new features to make the experience feel new.

I’m a serial early upgrader and picked up my 15 Pro Max at launch, but if that’s not you, and you’re already running IOS 17 on your 14 Pro Max, this may not apply to you.

USB-C

It’s about bloody time. It really is. But this is a major reason to upgrade. Charge your Mac, iPad, and iPhone with the same cable. In fact I can add to that list my Jabra Ear Buds, Remarkable 2, work HP laptop, and Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Welcome to the 21st century Apple. But reader, this is a big deal if like me you’re travelling around a fair bit.

The 15 Pro Max range also achieve rapid data speeds that shifts your data faster than Android counterparts. Though it unfortunately doesn’t move energy as quickly, so your iPhone will still take longer to charge.

Stability

Everything has settled now since the first update to IOS 17. I’ve not got any overheating, and the battery performs well, so I’m basing this on the iPhone after the software update.

But my iPhone 15 Pro Max is far more stable than the 14 Pro Max ever was. Honestly that was probably one of the poorest experiences I’ve had with a phone. That and my S22 Ultra are smartphones I’d rather forget.

The 15 Pro Max is now an absolute dream. Everything is consistently smooth, it never lags, and I’ve not yet found something that is able to outpace the A17 chip.

I have gone on the record to say that my Galaxy S23 Ultra is the best phone I’ve ever had. It’s incredible. But it’s also watching on from the sidelines because this 15 Pro Max has stolen the show.
