The Inner Workings of My Creative Mind
Letting Everyone in with This Interview

The following questions were created by Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) for the writers of the Medium publication The Brain is a Noodle.
[1] As a writer, how do you come up with new ideas? How do you capture them so that they are ready when you sit down to write?
There is no one place where I get my ideas. I get ideas in all sorts of places. It is like my mind is always on autopilot to observe and capture ideas.
I get ideas when I am reading or listening to audiobooks. I get ideas when I am peering out my window listening to some music. I get ideas when I am listening to podcasts. I get ideas when I am watching YouTube videos. I get ideas when I am in the shower.
These are the places I can remember where I get my ideas but the list is far from complete.
Most of the time I capture them by opening up the notes app and just writing down whatever sparked the idea. I have more than 100 ideas in my notes at any given point in time. Afterward, it comes down to executing those ideas.
[2] On the spectrum of introvert — ambivert — extrovert, where would you place yourself? What are some reason(s) you think you might place in that position? Does it change depending on context?
I would place myself as an ambivert. But it depends surely on my mood and state of my mind. I am almost exclusively an extrovert when I am hanging out with my close friends in a small group.
Whereas if the group becomes bigger or the people I am hanging out with are not close friends then I turn into an introvert.
I think the reasons for this shift are:
- I don’t want to share my ideologies and philosophies with new people because I am not sure if they would care for it.
- If I am at a place where I am for the sake of formality but not by choice.
[3] What is your relationship with sound? Whether you interpret this word to encompass awkward silences in interactions to the connection found through music, take us on a journey on how you relate to the external world through this sense.
Oh, I love sounds. To be precise, I love music and rain sound not the sound of honking horns in the traffic :P
For me, awkward silences pop up in conversations where I and other person are not involved with their heart. I try not to have a lot of such conversations.
Internally, I symbolize sound with music and it is such a creative way to showcase the innermost emotions. I consider music as poetry with sonorous sounds.
[4] How has your culture or context shaped your beliefs about relationships and what they “should” look like? How much do you subscribe to those expectations?
My culture (the one I was born into) expects me to be married as soon as I start earning and then have kids. This culture primarily focuses on other people in your life rather than you yourself.
Initially, you cater to what your parents say till you are a working adult. Then you get married and have kids. You spend your entire adult life taking care of your kids. When you get a bit older, you have to take care of your aging parents.
This culture has no scope of you being you, doing things for yourself.
I don’t subscribe to those expectations, not at all. These expectations were the reason that I moved out of my home country to Germany where if anything, there won't be any societal pressure.
[5] What is one food that reminds you of childhood?
Lentil soup and rice (or as I call it daal-chawal). This food always reminds me of Sundays at home when I would ask Maa to cook this.
I have been living outside my home for 10 years now and I can cook more dishes than my mom can but this dish I can’t cook better than her.
Whenever I cook it, I always remember the taste when Maa used to cook it and I feel my version of it is not as good as Maa’s.

Getting my First Job — I actually didn’t celebrate at all when I got my first job. I wish I could have taken myself out on a nice dinner if nothing else.
Coming to Germany — After coming for my M.Sc. here, I dived directly into studies and didn’t celebrate enough to let it sink in.

My Academic Performance — I never celebrated doing good in a test or an exam. Instead, I always made myself feel inadequate thinking that I can do better.
