The Influence Of Video Call Etiquette On Our Professional Reputation
Camera Off?
We are all used to video calls, but most of us are not aware that an etiquette is required.
I asked a few executives about their expectations during a video call with their teams. Some complained that people do not switch on the camera, which makes you seem less available — you might be doing something else. If people can see you, they can tell how engaged you are.
A compromise could be to switch on the camera at the beginning of the call, introduce yourself and smile. Then you could switch it off, to avoid technical issues and get a better audio connection. This is particularly important if someone connects from his mobile.
I think we could ask our bosses and teams what they prefer, because the way we communicate affects our performance evaluation.
