The Incredible Mind And Life Of John Lilly
From pioneering the flotation tank to communicating with dolphins on LSD

John Lilly is a truly one of a kind character. On the one hand, he was a man with an accomplished career across multiple fields of science. He went on to be a uniquely committed researcher of, and personal experimenter with, psychedelic substances. He had a very unique approach to such explorations, having the idea that the human brain could be looked at as a programmable ‘biocomputer.’ He maintains cultural relevance to this day due to his invention of the flotation tank early in his career, in 1954.
The Flotation Tank
Part of his motivation for developing a system of sensory-deprivation was to explore a notion that some were putting forward at the time, that consciousness was dependent on the processing of sensory data. Without that data, it was theorized that consciousness would not be maintained.
So he invented a tank intended to isolate the individual from sensory input. A tank filled with water at the temperature of the human body and enough salt to keep you naturally afloat. Soundproof, cut off from light.
It was discovered that, far from initiating a loss of consciousness, sensory deprivation seemed to expand the power of consciousness dramatically. His exploration in the tank was found to have a natural resonance with his later experimentation with psychedelic substances. His thinking in those years would be very much in the vein of his approach to the tank, as an explorer of the outer bounds of human consciousness.
Dolphin Communication
Another important element of his career which would seem to have contributed to his openness to unknown possibilities of consciousness was his attempts at communicating with dolphins. He was an early voice insisting on the high-level intelligence of certain sea creatures, most especially dolphins.
He became convinced that these were truly advanced beings. He believed dolphins were perfectly capable of communicating with humans, if we could only devise a method which would allow for shared communication, given the various physical and linguistic obstacles.
He spent an endless amount of time with these dolphins, trying to understand them. He stated that it seemed at times as if they were trying to say English words, as much as is possible with the vocal apparatus of a dolphin.
Moral Implications Of Dolphin Intelligence
He evolved substantially in his understanding of the implications of dolphin intelligence, in terms of how humans should, and possibly could, interact with them. His early government-backed research involved these dolphins being in captivity that was quite confined. The dolphins were not pleased with this arrangement. Lilly recounts that the dolphins went on a hunger strike, in protest of their conditions. This further convinced Lilly of the reality of dolphin intelligence.
Later in life, he would continue a more independent line of dolphin research. This time with quite a different approach. He bought a house on the ocean and flooded the basement. He wanted to be able to work with dolphins without keeping them in captivity. What better way than to open up your house to the ocean, and let them come and go as they please?
Lilly describes an experience he had taking LSD and then swimming with a group of dolphins. He claims to have tapped into a group mind where dolphins communicate telepathically with one another, and to have participated in that communication.
LSD And The Human Biocomputer
Lilly’s initial explorations of LSD preceded the cultural explosion that took place in the ’60s. He was one of those lucky neurological and psychological researchers who were able to get the first wind of the powerful potential of this visionary chemical substance before everyone else caught on.
LSD assisted him in coming to the notion explored in his seminal work “Programming And Metaprogramming In The Human Biocomputer.”
“No one can escape one’s own nature as a programmable entity. Literally, each one of us may be his programs, nothing more, nothing less.”
The basic method was as follows. Particularly with the assistance of psychedelic substances, you become aware of the various programs operating within yourself. Under the premise that these programs are malleable, alternate perspectives and programs are explored. They are entered into ‘as if real.’ You allow the experience as valid, maintain clear awareness, and explore the implications. The aim is to utilize this relativity in order to consciously shift your programming in self-chosen ways.
The Ketamine Years
After extensive experimentation with LSD, Lilly came across a dissociative psychedelic by the name of ketamine. Or ‘Vitamin K,’ as he came to lovingly refer to it. He found this substance to be better suited to his aims.
He came to experiment with ketamine in a way that was beyond commitment. He would give himself hourly injections for weeks on end. He deeply desired to explore the limits of how these inner realities could come to be projected onto the external reality, creating some sort of continuity.
People understandably felt that he had a problem with ketamine addiction. If you asked him, he’d say he was an extremely committed researcher. Regardless, this mode of operation brought him into extremely novel territories within human consciousness. He attempted to fuse psychedelic spaces with ordinary reality in a way that few have done. And some incredibly far out and thought-provoking perspectives emerged out of this experimentation.
ECCO And Solid State Intelligence
He came to feel that he was becoming aware of a network of intelligence that was in control of coincidences on the planet. He referred to this network as ECCO, Earth Coincidence Control Office. They influence patterns of coincidence, from the small scale of an individual’s life up to culture-shattering events on the macro scale. He believed that in becoming aware of this network, it may take on a greater interest in your life, and you could learn to exert some level of influence over the coincidences of your own life.
He also began to feel that he was tapping into two separate networks of intelligence which correspond to two general forms of life in the galaxy. One, water-based lifeforms. Two, solid-state intelligences. The conditions required for these forms of life, and the messages from their networks, are antagonistic. He eventually had an apocalyptic vision of solid-state intelligences taking over this planet, and making it uninhabitable for humans.
As evidence that he certainly seemed to undergo some sort of mania — and I do not intend that term disparagingly — he actually called the White House to warn them of the imminent threat this solid-state intelligence posed. You can imagine how peculiar it must have been for whoever took that call for the White House. Having a reputable, well-credentialed scientist call with this concern. Some people thought that he had gone mad.
His extreme experimentation came to an abrupt and total stop when he got into a serious accident and nearly died while riding his bicycle on Ketamine. He had the experience of being visited by two ‘guides,’ who told him he needed to focus again on his planetside trip.
John Lilly is a man who explored the outer terrains of human consciousness. Who tried to bridge the gap between those states and ordinary reality in a way few would dare. For that, he has to be respected. Not to mention such unusual and intriguing avenues of thought coming through such a knowledgeable and intelligent scientist. John Lilly is a true pioneer of human thought, and he is not someone whose legacy we should forget.
