The Incredible Evolution of My Best Friend’s Name

Nicknames and mnemonic devices

It all started with her name.

Our friendship was triggered by her beautiful handwriting. It was at that moment I knew she was friend-material.

The Magician’s secret was revealed

Just a few years ago, I mentioned her advanced name-writing skills as to why I wanted to be her friend initially.

She laughed, but I was serious. There’s not a lot I remember, but I can remember major parts of that day I met her.

Then she dropped me this truth bomb about her writing skills:

“That’s because it’s just a tee-pee, 2 sticks, a small stick with a dot, a snake, a circle, and a rainbow.”

Her fingers wrote the letters in the air as she told me.

How cute is that? Her mama taught her that mnemonic device so she could learn how to write her name.

It worked. She was Allison for about 10 years and then we evolved.

For some reason, a New York accent took over and our names changed to Mr. Deville and Mr. O’Doule. I don't know why it started or why we were Misters.

I suppose it’s just the names that work with the accents. We wouldn't want to get hung up on silly things like that, no would we?

Which was first, the Muffin or the Cupcake?

She calls me Cupcake and she is Muffin. I don’t know who started it or why, but I do know that I am winning.

You see ‘Muffin’ was shortened over time to ‘Muff’ and that has stuck around.

My proudest moment was a birthday cake we ordered that read “The Best Muff in Town”, and nothing at all about birthdays. She was thrilled.

Nowadays, my Muff is a Mama. I proposed that her little one be given the title of ‘Mini-Muffin’.

The jury is still out on that one. Fingers crossed, I hope it sticks!

Nicknames are almost always fun

Nicknames are one of my favorite parts of society. It’s fascinating to see when people grow into or out of what name they are given.

The only universal rule with nicknames is that you can’t pick one for yourself. It just doesn’t work.

I would love to know if you have been given a nickname. Please respond in the comments and/or write an origin story about your nickname, and tag me so I can read it!

Happy writing!
