The In Between
Devastation
Rejection
Bad news
& Bad luck
You have done everything right
But everything went wrong,
& Now
Here you sit,
On your unmade bed
Staring at the
Emptiness between
The floorboards
Staring
Staring
Staring
The feeling of apathy washes
Over you
& Suddenly
You start to identify
With the spaces
The space in between the floorboards
The space
Between your books
Between the TV and the wall
The couch and the floor
The space in between the cushions
The space between your head
& Heart
The clock ticks
You wonder
How long you have been sitting there
Staring
Staring
Staring
At this point
Time does not matter
You notice something
Between the floorboards
Like tar
Oozing out
Between the spaces
How long ago did I mop
You wonder
So
You bring out the mop
& Work hard to get rid of the grime
Back and forth
Back and forth
New water
Back and forth
& So on
Until the floor appears to be new
After turning around to put the mop
Back in place
You inspect your work
Shiny?
No
On a close inspection
The tar continues to ooze
Out of the floorboards
You mop
& Mop
& Mop
For what seems to be an eternity
But the grime keeps coming back
Worse
& Worse
& Worse
Maybe the neighbours have a leak?
You think
So
You call some person in charge
They send someone
& To them
The floorboards appear to be squeaky clean
In fact
They told you to stop mopping the floorboards
As it could potentially ruin them
So
You stop
But the grime keeps
Growing
From in between the floorboards
& You can not
Keep your eyes off it
It consumes you
You can’t do anything
But stare
& Stare you do
Realizing that it has
Started to grow into a shape
That reminds you of a hand
For every minute
Growing
& Growing
& Growing
Another hand
A torso
A leg
Another leg
A head
Until one day
You wake up
Staring into a gap
At someone sitting on a bed
That used to look
Like you
