The Importance of Showing Up
This one commitment can change your health.
I work at a marketing agency for my day job. This includes creating social media content for clients, among many other tasks where I wear different hats. As I was looking for Twitter content for a client, I looked through their old blogs to see if there was anything we could repurpose.
After culling through pages of stories, I came across one written by someone on their team whom I work closely with. I read it out of curiosity and, through doing so, discovered that her son had passed away at age 3, a little over 10 years ago. My heart sank as I thought of how much pain she must have felt, and must still feel on a day-to-day basis. She’s so vibrant and strong and is someone who I never would have known had gone through a tragedy like that.
In that blog, she shared how she worked through her grief by showing up consistently, even when it felt impossible to get through another day. Each day, she exercised her hope, a little bit at a time.
This commitment to showing up stuck with me. Whether it’s showing up for yourself, even in your lowest times, or showing up for others, the act of doing so can be transformative if done consistently.
Although I’m not coping with a life-altering event (*knock on wood*), this was a reminder for me that showing up is monumental for creating change in my health and wellbeing. Committing to calling my family every day, carving out time to work out 5–6 days a week, and making sure I journal at least 3 times a week has helped me become a much better version of myself. When it’s 6 am and I’m groaning about having to get out of bed, I just need to count down from 3, haul myself out from under the covers, lace up my sneakers, and show up.
If you look at the mountain of tasks ahead of you, it can look insurmountable. But if you take at least one extra step each day, you’ll soon find yourself with an incredible view from the top.
