The Importance of Fostering Imagination and Wonder in Children

A Parent’s Reflection on the Magic of Childhood and the Tooth Fairy

“There really are places in the heart you don’t even know exist until you love a child.” — Anne Lamott, Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son’s First Year

As a parent, there are countless moments that make our hearts swell with joy and take us back to simpler times.

For me, one of those moments was when my son was a little guy and still believed in the tooth fairy. He had this uncanny resemblance to Arthur the aardvark, with his huge, round glasses and chubby cheeks, and his pure belief in magic was simply priceless.

Whenever he’d lose a tooth, he’d carefully tuck it under his pillow and wait with bated breath for the tooth fairy’s arrival.

But little did he know, the tooth fairy was none other than yours truly, sneaking into his room in the wee hours of the night to swap out his tooth for a little cash.

I’ll never forget the look of pure joy on his face every time he discovered the money left by the tooth fairy. It was a simple pleasure that brought us both so much happiness.

But one night, I forgot to leave him any money. The next morning, he came running into the master bedroom, visibly upset that the tooth fairy had skipped his house.

In a panic, I quickly stashed some cash under a different pillow in his room and told him the tooth fairy had changed things up and left the money there instead.

Closing Thoughts

Looking back on those memories, it’s easy to see just how important it is to foster our children’s imaginations and sense of wonder.

Amidst the chaos and responsibilities of parenthood, we must take the time to appreciate the simple pleasures and revel in the magic of childhood.

In a world that can sometimes feel bleak and hopeless, it’s refreshing to see our children’s pure and innocent belief in magic.
