The Importance of DATA for DESIGNERS
Visuals, wireframes and animation: these are the things the Designer thinks about when he gets his hands on a new project. But there are times when doing basic research before designing, following full pre UX, becomes excruciatingly painful. The answer to this grueling issue is a fairly simple one, concentrate on DATA!
Yes, my fellow designers, you heard that right. Data perhaps isn’t the first thing that comes to our mind but let me tell you, it sure is convenient. It gives us the hand on information about the users who will be using our products. So I’ve made it a habit to divulge into seemingly complicated data, and over time I have realised that it has made my designs much better.
Refer to the images below, these are the examples of data chart that you may get, which you can translate into a meaningful insights.

Example One
45% of US users prefer Smart TV or Streaming Stick:
- Sales and ownership of Smart TV is growing and hence, brands which produce meaningful content for TV should start developing apps for users to give them better access
- Designer and product managers, fasten up your seat belts as you are about to learn about the new world of TV apps.
- As soon as you adopt to this, the more advantageous it will be for you

WhatsApp users are addicted
- It isn’t a news to us that users are super addicted to WhatsApp, and brands should leverage this
- WhatsApp doesn’t have a business group, but you can have dedicated mobile numbers where users can register complaints, order food, get status of products, push news and numerous other things that you can imagine

As per the latest researches, users spend 1 min in every 3 minutes on mobile:
- Now that you know that users spend some considerable amount of time on their mobile phones, you should make your mobile apps in sync with your web content. For example, when as a user, I was reading an article on web and for some reason I had to leave it in between, then after a while you can resume the same on you mobile
- Another example of e-commerce: when a user browses products and adds it in the cart, but doesn’t purchase, then you can show notification through mobile app (Price drop, Discount, Product left, etc.)
- This gives you the opportunity to be more creative and solve a lot of problems that our users face

- Don’t consider your mobile site and apps as secondary device to access content
- Let’s make our complex screens and features more usable
- Include useful features like Deep Linking. So, users from mSite are more converted in apps
Overview:
The reason behind this descriptive essay was to give you a faint idea about how to analyze data in a way that it benefits you as a designer and further, implement it in product management, design strategy, and business strategy.
