The Implosion of a Friendship
Mutual resentments fester; the fallout is irrevocable
My cousin Jane, age 43, has struggled with symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis for the past 10 years, consequential to which her application for disability benefits — on grounds of significant cognitive decline — was promptly approved.
Mercifully, Jane’s condition has not thus far manifested as regards mobility impairment. The downside of her deceptively healthful presentation is that many look askance at her for having prematurely retired from her career as Physician Assistant.
Jane’s birthday party, in April, was hosted by her closest friend, Marla.
Jane was blindsided.
Not by the event, which had been planned with Jane’s acquiescence, but by Marla’s dubiously generous gift.
Marla proudly preceded the presentation with an effusive tribute to Jane’s forbearance in the face of her disability.
Jane cringed at being thus portrayed, in particular given that several guests had not been privy to Jane’s condition.
Marla proceeded to reveal the nature of the gift.
The upshot is that Marla had pledged 500 dollars to sponsor Jane’s walk for the cause under the aegis of her ad hoc coinage “Team Jane.”
Jane had no intention of participating in a fundraiser. She avoids identifying with the disease and eschews support groups.
She was appalled when Marla made clear she expected Jane to aggressively solicit pledges.
Jane called me in distress shortly after she returned — escaped — from the party. She asked me to advise her as to how to deal with the dilemma.
She was loath to appear ungrateful, yet she abhorred the prospect of allowing herself to be railroaded.
I urged Jane to tactfully decline the burdensome gift.
Jane chose to avoid confronting Marla. She texted thanks the following day, though she was unable to muster the enthusiasm that Marla thought was due her.
For her part, Marla, despite rightly inferring that she’d overstepped, was nonetheless grossly offended — as became apparent when she abruptly ghosted Jane.
Over the past four months, Jane has intermittently pleaded with Marla via text, to no avail.
In the interim, feeling obliged to atone for her ingratitude, Jane — steeling herself to garner support from select friends — attended the walk, which took place in June.
Jane had texted Marla of her intent the day prior, which Marla tersely acknowledged, after which she resumed ghosting Jane.
Yesterday, Jane confronted Marla face-to-face, blindsiding her as she emerged from her house.
It did not go well.
Marla eventually admitted to having felt stung by Jane’s ingratitude for her lavish gift.
Jane called Marla out, defensively retorting that Marla’s ostensible generosity had been motivated by self-centered aggrandizement.
They parted bitterly.
The end.
