The Impact of Clappers and Runners on Medium Earnings

Does engagement from nonmembers count?

Photo by Carlos Muza on Unsplash

In the world of online content platforms, such as Medium, creators strive to showcase their work and engage with readers. While genuine appreciation is always welcome, there’s a darker side that has emerged - the world of "clappers" and "runners."

Since last, some days I am noticing many people are just clapping and running away. They do neither follow nor highlight any of the sentences from the post.

From August 1st a "read" is typically counted when a reader spends a certain amount of time (e.g., 30 seconds) on an article.

I have recently read the story from Medium’s help centre that if non-members view your story or even clap, highlight or reply to your story, these actions will show up in your story stats as a non-member read but it will not count towards your earnings. Just like that, if a member view your story but if they hit the back button or close the tab before 30 seconds it will not count in earnings.

So, when you just click on the article clap and run away it will decrease the writer’s read ratio. If you do not want to read then just don’t clap to get the clap or view back on your posts.

If you truly want me to read your article then read the article, clap and leave a thoughtful comment. Please do not just clap and go.

I kindly request you to take a moment to read the article before applauding it. Your genuine engagement with the content enriches our community and fosters meaningful discussions. Let’s support each other by being active and thoughtful participants. Thank you for your understanding and valuable contributions.

I would like to give a shoutout to Surekha Chandrasekhar for sharing a post about gratitude.
