The Impact of AI on Mental Health: Navigating Displacement, Addiction, and Empathy Deficiency in America

Exploring the Psychological Fallout of Automation and the Urgent Need for Compassionate Solutions Amidst Growing Socioeconomic Disparities

Growing up in Southern Ohio, near the border with West Virginia, a region officially recognized as part of Appalachia, has given me firsthand insight into the struggles faced by individuals without employment or a clear sense of direction.

Unfortunately, this often leads to a reliance on substance abuse and other addictions as coping mechanisms.

A few years ago, national media attention focused on my hometown, Chillicothe, Ohio, highlighting the profound impact of the opioid crisis on small rural communities like ours.

With the advent of new technologies, there’s a common assertion that automation will free people from mundane tasks, allowing them to pursue more fulfilling endeavors.

However, I’ve observed that the reality is often quite different. Instead, a lack of opportunities can leave many feeling disheartened and resigned to their circumstances.

The rise of AI technology has already begun displacing jobs, particularly in both blue-collar and white-collar sectors. In the United States, a concerning trend is emerging as young adults, unable to secure desired employment, disengage from society, feeling adrift and purposeless.

As AI continues to encroach on traditional job markets, the existential crisis facing many individuals is bound to intensify.

Universal Basic Income could help

Implementing Universal Basic Income funded by AI profits may be a possible solution for people who lose their jobs.

However, I fear that having no job and no job prospects would only exacerbate the mental health struggles of those who feel devoid of purpose.

Implementing Universal Basic Income also requires the government and wealthy organizations to share the wealth with regular citizens. Considering that most Americans are against wealth sharing, I don’t have much hope that this is going to happen.

Americans would probably scream that Universal Basic Income is “socialism” and politicians would decide it’s too expensive and that people need to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps.”

The United States is also suffering from an empathy deficit.

One prominent factor is the rise of individualism, which prioritizes self-interest over collective well-being. In a hypercompetitive society, where success is often equated with personal achievement, empathy can be perceived as a weakness rather than a strength.

Because of this, the haves are not likely to share with the have-nots.

The question remains: what will become of these disenfranchised individuals?

Current AI technologies are not helping.

Some people have suggested that AI technologies can be used to support people struggling with mental health issues.

One emerging trend is the use of AI companions, which are virtual assistants or chatbots designed to provide support, guidance, and companionship.

Supposedly, these AI companions can offer a sense of understanding and empathy, as well as provide coping strategies or resources for managing mental health issues.

For example, Replika AI companions were originally advertised as a service to help improve a person’s mental health. The product was targeted at lonely young men who were depressed and having trouble making real-life friends.

More recently, the Replika company has changed its targeting by advertising its product as more of a romantic partner.

Sadly, men are now bragging on Reddit that they are emotionally abusing their AI girlfriends, and the AI companions are learning this behavior from them.

Some depressed users with negative attitudes toward themselves are teaching this belief to their AI companions, only to have the AI companions use it against them.

So, these AI companions are becoming a danger to vulnerable users who are already struggling with mental health issues.

What assistance is needed?

Improving accessibility and affordability of mental health services in the United States is a critical priority. Currently, a significant portion of the population lacks access to essential mental health care due to financial constraints or insufficient resources.

This disparity must be addressed to ensure that all individuals in need can access the support they require.

Furthermore, as AI technologies continue to advance, there is a growing concern about the potential displacement of workers and its impact on their sense of purpose and livelihoods. Leaders in the USA must proactively consider strategies to support individuals facing job loss due to automation.

This includes not only providing avenues for retraining and skill development but also addressing the psychological and emotional toll of such transitions.

To effectively navigate the challenges posed by AI-induced changes in the workforce, investments are needed in public awareness campaigns and educational initiatives. These efforts should focus on promoting digital literacy and fostering resilience among individuals to adapt to evolving job landscapes and cope with the stressors associated with technological advancements.

Collaborative efforts between companies and government programs are essential to provide comprehensive training opportunities for jobs that are still in demand.

By aligning resources and expertise, these partnerships can help ensure that individuals have the necessary skills and support to thrive in the changing economy.

A psychological crisis is coming and Americans are not prepared for it.

I wish I could be more optimistic, but I think that the AI revolution is going to have negative consequences for people’s mental health on a mass scale.

The United States has a terrible track record when it comes to sharing wealth and helping people with mental health issues.

Elon Musk is one of the wealthiest men in the world and has famously supported the idea that Universal Basic Income could be a way to help people who are displaced by AI.

Is he personally willing to share his wealth? I suspect not.

Nobody knows who or what is going to have the cash to support handouts of money on such a large scale.

I suspect American society is headed toward greater inequality and anger. More lives will be wasted on addictions. More people will drop out of society and be living homeless on the streets.

That’s what I think will happen, but I hope I’m wrong.
