It’s a Hooking Tease!

As good writers, do we also need to be good hookers? 👠

A story hook can be seen as a tease (a big tease) in gaining our reader’s attention.

LET’S TAKE A LOOK … AT A HOOK …

‘Once upon a time, there was a woman who discovered she had turned into the wrong person.’

— Anne Tyler (Back When We Were Grownups).

Even Tyler’s book title is intriguing, without her opening sentence hook of ‘turning into the wrong person’.

We all love a good opening hook, whether by a jolt or something more mysterious.

Our hook must …

• Literally, act as bait to reel us in and
• Keep us hooked with just enough intrigue and suspense to keep us reading … and reading.
