A 75-word novel poem

The Honorable Ancestor

It was a dark and stormy night on their return from post-war Japan. Just three years old, she wanted to make a very good impression on her Most Honorable Southern Ancestor, invoking her deepest bow.

Takasan ami, neh?” she said, in poor imitation of her Japanese tutors. “Much rain, yes?” Her parents beamed with pride at their precocious daughter.

“How dare you allow my only great grandchild to associate with those barbarians!” her great-grandmother spat.

Author’s note: Another true story. My great-grandmother was the matriarch of my mother’s family, plantation-owner, host to sharecroppers — descendants of enslaved persons who never left the plantation when “freed.” The racism on that side of my family runs deep, and still does, as far as I know. I ceased all contact with them many years ago.
