‘Genius in a Bottle’ Prompted Writing Challenge

The Hole of My Life

GiaB writing prompt #2–1

Possibilities unfixed, as I swing my club. Could go either way.

One could fill libraries with material documenting the significance of sport to the human civilisation.

It is exercise to some, and life to others. It is a pastime, a therapy, an escape, and a burden.

It represents the struggle for excellence and also an opportunity for the comical impoverishment of skill. It both relieves stress and causes more than one can comprehend.

It is bliss and maddening torture at the same time.

In some cultures certain sports are feats of strength, of bravery, demonstrations of power and valour, and success in sporting events sometimes wins the hand of a fair bride.

Sport is an integral part of business with dealings occurring around the periphery of many sports, golf for example. And the tycoons always seem to be drawn to Fight Night. It can also be the portal of gambling that makes or breaks a person.

Tickets to sporting events are no less than currency for some and a generous gift for others. For those with a devotion to a sports team, season tickets may even represent a fixed commitment in one’s life.

I haven’t even scratched the surface of what sports means to people.

Sports also means absolutely nothing to some. The sheer avoidance of it itself giving purpose.

However one views this arena of human endeavour, it is still amazing how we have found ways to play at life, learn about life and live a life through various sporting avenues. It is as if we crave life so much that we seek to find ways to live more life in the space of one lifetime.

The Challenge

We invite writers to produce a piece of poetry, fiction or non-fiction on the theme of Sports.

For this prompt we are looking to focus on any recognised sport or athletic activity. There is no restriction for sports that belong to different countries and cultures as long as it is recognised in that country as a sport and/ or athletic activity.

This prompt will close on the 1st of September, 2021 at 9:00AM PST/PDT. At which time, the next prompt will be released.

The Guidelines

We cannot publish pieces or reward writers who self publish or publish at another publication, so those pieces have to remain external to the challenge. Only pieces submitted to Genius in a Bottle will be considered for the challenge. If inviting other writers from outside the publication, please ensure they are aware of this.

Poetry is to be limited to 30 lines but can be in any style. Fiction and non-fiction submissions are to be capped at 750 words.

Please refer to the prompt in the subtitle. Feel free to copy this as a template: GiaB prompt # [insert prompt number and theme here].

When submitting, please ensure that one of the 5 tags is GiaBprompt. Please ensure a second tag is Poetry, fiction, or non-fiction, as appropriate.

We would like to become exposed to writers and pieces that you have enjoyed in all of Medium. Please tag up to ten writers whose pieces you have enjoyed recently, or who you feel may enjoy participating in this challenge.

For further information pertaining to the challenge, please refer to the rules and guidelines.

And away we go. We look forward to enjoying the paradise of the written word with you all.
