The Hoax Virus

Don Trump tries to rewrite history

The first I began to feel worried about America and the Coronavirus was when I heard Don Trump claim that there were only 15 cases of the disease in America. At that stage, Wikipedia was reporting more than double that number.

As the days progressed and the numbers became ever larger, I decided to begin keeping track of the spread of the virus in America. On 6 March, I commenced a spreadsheet, based on the scratch paper I’d been using until then.

Looking at China, 33% increase in cases daily, and a 3% death rate seemed about right, so I used those figures to project the likely track of infected and dead in America. (In yellow, below.) I made it so that I could change the percentages as time went by. 33% seems to have worked out fairly accurately, and 3% (as I hoped) was too high.

Since the first entry, I’ve also noted the actual numbers (in red) based on Wikipedia’s daily totals, taken about 0800 Australian time each day.

I’ve also calculated the increase and death rate (white background).

As I write these words, the numbers of infected are doubling every couple of days, with deaths going up more slowly. But it’s going to be bad. In a few days, America’s number of infected will surpass those of Italy, and by the end of the month, those of China, which has managed to slow the rise in infected to less than 20 per day and may reasonably assumed to have gotten on top of it.

America shows very little sign of effective management. I’ve previously discussed the severe measures imposed there:

America has — like Italy — adopted the most half-hearted of responses. I blame Don Trump and his early inaction for this. Playing down a pandemic was an act of shocking callousness, apparently performed to buoy up the local stock market, which naturally didn’t work. Markets work on accurate news over any period longer than a few hours, and it became readily apparent that Trump was wildly off track with reality.

Now that he can no longer claim that there is nothing to see now, move along, he is attempting to conceal his earlier failures. Don’t let him.
