The Historical Journey Of Dreams

How much do we know about dreams?

The Cave Art Paintings of the Chauvet Cave, France

Ever since I did research on dreams, I’ve come across a lot of interesting things. At first, I thought it consisted only of ‘Interpretation of Dreams’ (S. Freud’s 2 volume book) and Jung’s dream books. As I enter this depth, my adventure goes into deeper, more unknown areas, from 32 thousand years of cave paintings, the history of religions, Mythology, Philosophy, and finally Psychology.

When we looked more carefully at some of the paintings drawn on the cave walls, the idea that some animal and human figures were some forms other than the usual normal forms and that these were reflections of some dreams of people gradually gained strength. When I look at the pictures in this form, I think that although it is thought to be an effective purpose according to some researchers, an animal that we see in dreams is depicted as ‘out of its normal forms’.

According to Aristotle, “As for the dream-based prophecy that takes place in sleep, we cannot dismiss it or have absolute confidence in it.” He wrote the Dream Theory book on dreams, which was not emphasized at that time.

The God of Sleep Hypnos, https://images.app.goo.gl/6dt6uMygxGncTwzr7

In mythology, however, the situation is more mysterious. In Greek mythology, “Nyx”, the goddess of the night living in the skies, the god “Erobus” who ruled the eternal darkness in the underworld, the god of death “Thanatos” and the god of sleep “Hypnos”, the goddess of hallucination, relaxation “Pasithea”, the god of dreams containing heroism and otherworldly “ Morpheus ”, the god of fearful dreams“ Phobetor ”and finally“ Phantasos ”, the god of illusions and fantasy dreams, and the extraordinary union point of all these gods, it is clearly seen how much is valued.

Religions, on the other hand, have had a close interest in dreams in the form of a search for a meaning that is far from scientific and closer to prophecies. The idea that there are masculinity, discursion, mysticism, interpretation and messages from God prevailed. In general, there are 3 forms of dreams in religion. The first is the messenger dreams in which God’s message is delivered, the second is the bad dreams where the messages of the devil are delivered, and the third is the dreams that are influenced by daily life.

As can be seen, it is seen that there is a categorization of dreams in religion. Only messenger dreams should be told to other people. Because telling other dreams is bad. On the other hand, as a result of the effort to understand what is the message in dreams from the Gods, the expressionists have started, and those who are good in their work have always been valued at the state level.

All imaginary ideas that are unconditionally supposed to remind us once again of the ancient history of mankind, in which delusions were so frequent and sometimes affected all societies and peoples at the same time, have a definite meaning. Thus, we see once again what the old people did in our sleep and dreams. “Nietzsche wrote in his book Human, All Too Human (1878).

Dreams take us back to our ancestors as a result of collective consciousness, uniting us with their life as a perfect work of nature. It is formed as a profound blend of today’s modern conception with common concepts and their inevitable images that have been used from past to present. In addition to the fact that dreams are the result of personal daily events, it does this by making use of the interaction feature of our minds while recording the life of the universe like a universal camera that combines our lives in times far behind and we no longer have the chance to witness it with the present thanks to the unique vitality of concepts. What an awesome universal recording tool.

Also in the same book, “In the crude and primitive cultural ages, people believed that they could dream of a second real world: all metaphysics is based on this. Without dreams, man would not be able to divide the world in half. The separation of body and soul also depends on the old thought of spiritual ghosts. So, ghost, maybe this is the origin of belief in God. “ He claims that the God, whom he thought was dead, was born through dreams. So God is a universal dream that people only dream about. It’s a very different perspective.

Sigmund Freud

In addition to the development of science, with the publication of Freud’s book The Interpretation of Dreams published in 1900, which was instrumental in the birth of Neurology and then the science of Psychology, another area of dreams that were not discovered until that day emerged.

“The content of a thought invariably depends more or less on the dreamer’s individual personality, age, gender, class, education standard, habitual way of life and the events and experiences of his past life.” He has revealed that dreams are completely personal and incomparably uniquely and if analyzed correctly, a new method for solving psychological problems. According to Freud, the purpose of dreams is to satisfy a desire.

His sources of dreams are:

1) External (objective) sensory arousals,

2) Internal (subjective) sensory stimulation,

3) Internal (organic) arousal,

4) Pure spiritual arousal.

According to Jung, who was once Freud’s brilliant student, dreams are influenced by personal everyday life as Freud speaks, but as Nietzsche also refers to us to our primitive ancestors, from their existence to the present day, all accumulated in the collective mind memory. The windpipe of our being able to carry our experiences to this memory with their visual, auditory, and emotional integrity is the way of life.

Of course, there are many opinions. I think that in addition to personal experiences, collective experiences of society in the process have an important place in dreams. Social events, such as the ability to push personal experiences into the subconscious, are pushed into the social subconscious.

Because common consciousness creates, common memory and common subconscious.

Of course, there are many different opinions. I think that in addition to personal experiences, collective experiences of society in the process have an important place in dreams. Social events, such as the ability to push personal experiences into the subconscious, are pushed into the social subconscious. Because it creates common consciousness, common memory and common subconscious.

The expansion of the numerical and geographical boundaries of society expands the realm of collective consciousness. In addition to the family rituals and daily life of a small family, they are influenced by the general life of the neighborhood, district, city, country and the world as a whole.

And whatever impression this effect leaves on the conscious levels will be positioned in the subconscious accordingly, and this will find its counterpart in human dreams just like daily life in the first link of the chain.

I’ve been collecting people’s dreams for a while. Each dream carries unique, authentic sounds, smells and emotions from the brush of a master artist.
