From your friends at The Happy Human

While you’re always invited to send your stories on any topics of your choice related to finding and experiencing the bright side of life, the editors at The Happy Human also like to give you some inspiration in the form of writing prompts.

As I write this on the first day of May, I’m thinking about music and the many joys it can bring into our lives. Here are some possibilities for story topics related to the theme of music — and of course other ideas are welcome, too. Please share in the comments if you have other music-related writing ideas to suggest.

  • What songs give your mood a boost?
  • Do you listen to music while writing? What do you listen to, and how does it help you with your creative work?
  • Do you have favorite playlists for driving, cleaning, working…?
  • What makes you want to dance? Does certain music, or a certain setting, or being with someone in particular make you feel like dancing?
  • Do you have a beloved radio station, maybe from your teenage years?
  • What’s the best concert you ever attended?
  • What other memories do you have about listening to music? Did you tape your favorite songs off the radio? Did you visit a local music store? Did you play your mom’s records and pretend to be a DJ? (Maybe that last one is just me!)
  • Do you play an instrument? How does playing music create happy moments in your life?
  • Do you like to sing? Do you sing in public or only in private?
  • What formats of music do you prefer (or remember enjoying from your past): records, tapes, CDs, iPod, the old MySpace player, streaming services…?
  • Have you ever written music? What was that experience like?
  • Last but not least, who are some of your favorite music artists, and what do you love about them?

We accept essays and also poetry, so please feel free to share in the format that feels right to you. Shorter form reflections are also welcome here.

As an example of a personal story, I grew up in the 1980s and loved (and continue to love) the music of that time. I wrote about introducing my foster daughter to my favorite music when we made up a game where we watched music videos together on YouTube.

I hope to read your personal stories of the joys of music, too.

Your writing and editing friend,

Amanda Laughtland
