The Hilarious Downside of Having Multiple Tabs of Medium Stories Open at Once

Is it a genuine mistake or are some faking engagement till they make it?

https://www.freepik.com/author/lookstudio

Are you a multitasker? By that, I mean, do you have multiple tabs of Medium stories open while trying to catch up on your reading and writing?

3 things that could be the result of having multiple tabs of Medium stories open

Over the last few months, I’ve been referred to as Kristina (as in Kristina God), Sara as in (Sara Burdick or maybe Sara Larca?), and Virginia (who on earth is Virginia🤔?) in the comments.

I’ve also been complimented for my cooking skills when I’ve never written about cooking 🤷‍♀️. I’m assuming the comment was meant for my friend Donnette Anglin and her wonderful article about mama’s cooking.

And my articles have had claps left by writers from within my circle minus the reads😖 and sometimes, lovely comments minus the claps.

I’d like to think these are genuine mistakes — the downside of having multiple tabs of Medium stories open at once.

Multitasking much? Giphy

However, what about those who are trying to fake it till they make it?

Is clapping n’ running (without reading) and leaving a fake comment their idea of attracting followers and readers?

Aren’t these repeat offenders aware that they are quite well known and have achieved notoriety status in conversations?

Is that what they want to be famous for? Not for their talent, authenticity, or quality of their articles but instead for their ability to clap n’ run?

I recently wrote an article about it and the out of the 106 comments, one, in particular, caught my attention👇

Perhaps some may agree with the points that this person makes but quite frankly I’ve never met another writer who advocates for fake engagement so openly.

Well, they are entitled to their thoughts. Nevertheless, I find it interesting that they picked my article to get a little attention for themselves 😉

Clever.

It’s ironic in a way since I seriously doubt they even read my post in its entirety as I do make a mention of how there is a lag in read ratio updates (which they so kindly took the time to remind me about).

Me being me, I took a quick peek to see how their articles are faring based on their pro-fake engagement approach.

Nah, I wouldn’t recommend taking their advice. And from what I see, neither would I recommend that they continue with their own advice.

So here are some questions that I’m pondering:

  • Does it make sense to have someone leave claps on your article without bothering to read it?
  • Would you call that support? Or just think of it as a so and so was here stamp?
  • They mention that the algorithm likes any kind of activity on posts — real or fake. The latter smacks of trying to game the system but then who am I to judge if people find it a shortcut to ‘success?’
  • How does one benefit from this in the long run? Could it be a reason why new writers quickly get disillusioned and leave the platform in droves?
  • Is fake engagement one of the reasons why a lot of writers have been complaining about a decline in read ratio?
  • More importantly, do you think you can gain traction on this platform with fake engagement?

I’m curious to know what your thoughts are.
