The Hidden Powers Of Walking
Why walking every day has become a lifelong goal of mine
I’ve realized that walking is the best thing you can do to clear your mind, brighten up your mood, re-energize yourself after a tough day, and everything in between.
For me, walking makes everything better — it makes me happy, gives me a sense of freedom, space to think, and keeps me fit all at the same time.
For the past year, I’ve been walking at least 10,000 steps every day. More recently, I set myself a daily challenge of 11,000 steps for MarchTheMonth, raising awareness and money for Prostate cancer.
Pushing myself that extra 1,000 steps; forced me to take a step back (excuse the pun) and realise that there are so many benefits to having this habit of walking and how powerful it is. I want to share my gratitude for this habit I’ve created myself, by putting together a list of reasons why you should too, make walking a part of your life…
No Skills Required
Unlike other forms of exercise, walking is one that requires no skills, expensive equipment or team players. If shoes are your excuse, purchase some walking shoes or upgrade your trainers. If it’s your local area that you’re bored of then walk a little further and explore a new neighbourhood. Drive to a park and stroll through the endless muddy paths. If you really can’t get outside for whatever reason, walking on the spot is just as good for you — there is really no excuse.
Bottom Line? If you’ve got legs, get outside and use them. Walking is the easiest form of exercise and because it’s a lower impact exercise, it can be done for longer periods of time.
Improves Your Health
We’ve all been told how important it is to exercise but ever wondered how walking actually improves your health? Research shows that just 30 minutes a day can improve your cardiovascular fitness, strengthen your bones and reduce excess body fat. Walking is also known to reduce your risk of developing conditions such as heart disease or diabetes.
Increases Your Lifespan
Walking is exceptionally good for your health but it may even help you live longer. Brisk walks are best here but even walking less than the recommended amount is still beneficial.
Boosts your Mood
If you’re looking to boost your mood or relieve stress, walking can help. It gives you time to think and removes you from the stressful environment. Whilst taking in the fresh air and moving, your body is releasing endorphins, known to naturally improve your mood. Many doctors recommend walking regularly as a natural treatment to reduce stress and depression.
How can you develop a walking habit for yourself?
Developing a good walking habit will make you more productive, more motivated, and overall a healthier person. Here are some suggestions to get you moving:
- Soon as you wake up, get dressed and walk out the door. The movement and fresh air will help you wake up, even without coffee.
- Take regular 5-minute breaks away from your desk and walk around your office.
- Organise a hike with your friends, and later reward yourself with a delicious brunch.
- Wherever you’re headed via public transport, get off one stop earlier and walk the rest of the way
- Walk to complete your errands
- Get out for a 30-minute walk during your lunch break
- Take yourself out for a short stroll after work or before you drive home
Whether it’s a short walk to the post office or a long hike at the weekend, every step counts.
There are so many benefits for a happier and healthier life, it’s really a no-brainer. If you invest in your long-term health now and you’ll soon see what difference walking can make to your mind and body. That being said, I’m off for a stroll.
