What is Romanticism?

It has been believed that Romanticism was an intellectual and artistic movement, it started in Western Europe around the middle of the 18th century. This concept doesn’t sound appropriate to me because romanticism is a natural trait of humans based on attitudes, beliefs, and emotions in a relationship. The period definitely allowed the expression of the individual’s thoughts and sentiments openly in the social structure in Western Europe.

The etymology illustrates its origin in the word ‘Romance’ from Latin. It envelops a vast significance emphasized to individual’s emotion, imagination for love of nature, relationship in life etc. All these are finally, manifested in the art encompassing painting, dancing, singing, literature, music etc

Here the ideas and feelings are powered by intellect, imagination, and inspiration. All these are expressed in different forms including vocal or scripted that can be heard by the tender heart and envisioned in splendid colour even by closing the eyes.

Famous writers described romanticism in many ways like;

“Romanticism as the beauty without bounds — the beautiful infinite” by Jean-Paul

It’s difficult to define Romanticism without talking about poetry! Let me confine the discussion to poetry.

In literature, poetry is the monarch. Writing poetry involves stringing appropriate words and looping them together in rhythm revealing what the poet feels and leaving further to the imagination between the lines and words. It is a beautiful form of writing.

Most of the time, poetry is a spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings; it takes its origin from emotions collected in tranquillity- William Wordsworth

Reading poetry is as difficult as writing it because one needs to realize the feeling of the poet that is not in words but hidden in the words. It is like opening the flood gate of the poet’s soul to see what’s glittering in the darkness.

Romantic poets weave mystery, vast, wild, sensuous, and rich imagination into their poetry with honesty towards their ideas and opinions.

Many poets have/are writing romantic poems on the medium platform and are very popular. Reading their words, the literary gems is always appealing, soothing, and relaxing….

There are several poets in this category but I list just 5 now.

The vibrancy of romanticism flows in their poems, that is to be felt……

  • David Rudder
  • Sahil Patel
