Summary

The provided content is a poetic exploration of the theme of grief and resilience, centered around the metaphor of the heart keeping score of life's losses and enduring pains.

Abstract

The text presents a series of interconnected poems under the title "The Heart Keeps Score; A Hushing Score — Journeyman’s Poems," with a focal piece named "Grief To Twine." It delves into the heart's role in cataloging and enduring the pain of loss and the passage of time, suggesting a quiet strength that persists despite the emotional toll. The heart is personified as a scorekeeper, meticulously noting each sorrow and triumph, even as the individual grapples with despair and the complexities of existence. The poems convey a sense of struggle and the search for solace, with the heart's resilience as a recurring motif. Additionally, the content includes invitations to explore related works by the author, such as "America’s Vanity Hereafter — Poem," and to subscribe to a newsletter for further literary engagement.

Opinions

  • The author views the heart as an enduring entity that bears the brunt of grief and loss, yet continues to function and maintain a sense of order amidst emotional chaos.
  • There is a sense of the heart's duality, both as a vital organ and as a metaphorical keeper of emotional experiences, suggesting a deep connection between the physical and the psychological.
  • The poems reflect a personal journey through sorrow, with the author possibly expressing a resignation to the heart's burden and an acceptance of life's cyclical nature of joy and suffering.
  • The repeated emphasis on the heart "keeping score" implies a belief in the importance of acknowledging and processing emotional pain, rather than ignoring or dismissing it.
  • The inclusion of visual art, such as the photographs by Giuseppe De Nitts and Katharine Hepburn, suggests that the author values the interplay between different forms of artistic expression to enhance the thematic depth of the poems.
  • The invitation to join the "DOCTOR’S NEWSLETTER" indicates the author's desire to engage with the audience beyond the poems and to foster a community of readers interested in the themes of grief and resilience.

Grief To Twine

The Heart Keeps Score; A Hushing Score — Journeyman’s Poems

The Heart Beating Still, Whilst The Scoring Of Hurt Is Done

Giuseppe De Nitt — Before the ball (1879)

The Heart keeps check -

Keeps the tidings and scores: This grief was heard by its crying solvency.

The Heart keeps score

On all those lost in times forebore

And counted to the endless

Score — the wilt — the prattle of time

Aye: She keeps Score; a tidy score.

Before the ball, the knocking done

By that tempting heart, against the carcass of a belated chest

When the core comes to detest, the petty company —

The Heart keeps tides for tides,

A grizzly sweat, a hobbling pain I may incline

By the beads that droop the brow ever further

Down the bents of misery

The Heart keeps her tidy check

And checking that, I wrestle myself

To a sleep not known for the longest time

The Heart keeps tides for tides

This bedding grief,

And washing ashore, I feel myself no longer…

Slacking testy breaches of fair light

To the vail to gale the living

The Heart keeps that tidy score

Beyond the bend of the road

I cannot see myself anymore.
