The Harsh Truth about your 9–5 Job
Trading time for money is a shitty deal in my opinion.
I read a book. Now I can’t go back. I can’t pretend that I haven’t read it. What I understood changed my entire goals and priorities.
But beware: what I am about to present to you may be unpleasant. It might make you regret some of your decisions, but it could also help many people. And it is probably the truth. So I will share it. The book I am talking about is “The Millionaire Fastlane” by MJ DeMarco.
The traditional “safe” route
Imagine you are following the expectations of your parents, your teachers, and society. You go to school, then to college. This allows you to finally get a good job in a reputable company, where you can even earn 6 figures a year after a few years of experience. That’s a good way to go, isn’t it?
But you can also look at it like MJ DeMarco: You spend years in school to be able to go to college. Then you spend a few years there to get your bachelor’s degree, which allows you to get your master’s degree. Then you spend two more years studying for your master’s. Finally, you get a job to pay off your student debt. After a few years, you have done that and can start to build up your assets.
Quite a long way around to wealth. Don’t you think?
This route feels like something like this.
This is exactly why this path is called the slowlane in the book referred to.
The Problem with 9–5 Jobs
In any normal job you trade your time for money. 5 days work for 2 days off. If you work 8 hours every day and you include the way to work and the breaks, you often spend at least 10 hours. So you can’t do much except eat and sleep that day.
At some point, after you’ve worked 40 years, you can retire and gain freedom. Now you have a lot of time. The problem is that you will die some day and that you might be sick by then.
By working a 9–5, you basically trade your time in your 30s and 40s, when you’re hopefully still in top shape, for time in your late 60s. Questionable how much you can do with it then.
The reason you have to work so long is that your salary is capped in a 9–5. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a raise every few years to compensate for inflation. So you limit your income and you also trade time for money and time in good health for time in old age. A bad deal in my opinion.
What to do instead
The alternative way is that of the entrepreneur. This path can lead to relatively quick prosperity. MJ DeMarco describes this path in his book as the fastlane.
People who choose the fastlane often stand out because of their beliefs. Unlike the slowlaner, who sees money as a scarce resource, the fastlaner thinks that there is an abundance of money. For him or her, money is simply a measure of value that he or she generates. Another important belief of the fastlaner is that time is the most valuable resource we have. In most cases, a fastlaner is an entrepreneur whose income is made up of his business and his investments. In this way, he manages to avoid having to trade his time for money. Since each of us has only 24h a day, this is essential to become rich. You need to find a way to generate passive income. Or as Warren Buffet would say:
“If you don’t find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die.”
How to enter the fastlane
Tired of your 9–5 and want to escape it? Dumping it right away would probably be stupid. You won’t be able to replace your entire income with any new business in the first month. That’s why I would recommend starting a side hustle first.
These days, it’s easier than ever to take the fastlane. The Internet gives us countless opportunities to earn money and build our own businesses. Teenagers earn millions by dancing on TikTok and some women get rich from nude pictures on Onlyfans. Not that I would recommend it, but it shows that the internet really gives us countless opportunities.
Writing here on Medium can also be a good start when turning onto the fastlane. After all, a published article brings you passive income, if you will.
Tim Denning, one of the most popular writers here on Medium writes a lot about how he managed to quit his job by writing online.
As already mentioned, there are countless other possibilities. Here are some ideas for businesses without major barriers to entry:
- Blogging
- Affiliate marketing
- Producing online courses (for example on Skillshare)
- Offering your services like building websites (for example on Fiverr)
- Starting a Youtube channel
- Selling books on Amazon KDP
