The Habit of Good Moods

Make An Effort

Photo by Jonathan Borba on Unsplash

One of the things I am trying to conquer are bad moods. I keep remembering a story I heard years ago about the Buddha.

He was lecturing to his students and whoever else wandered by and a heckler really took aim. It was uncomfortable for the students and for everyone else. After the lesson was finished and the crowd had gone one of the Buddha’s students asked him why he was not concerned about the heckler. Buddha said, “His anger was a gift I chose not to accept.”

If we think bad thoughts all day, then bad things will follow us. If we think good thoughts, then better will follow us.

It’s like a habit. Sometimes you just have to remind yourself and force yourself to think those good thoughts.

I have to admit that I am certainly not an expert good thought thinker. I find myself in the dumps often enough, just like everybody else, but I think it is important to try.

We are blessed with a platform, with a stage here at Medium where we can get up and talk to people. It doesn’t matter if nobody reads your story for 2 months, but one day a person who really needs to hear what you have to say will come by. So, keep that in mind. It’s a good thought.

You just have to have faith that the help you offer is accepted by whoever needs it the most. And the funny thing? It will never be for those people you feel should accept it. It’s going to be somebody you probably don’t even know.

If you hadn’t written that story the likelihood of helping somebody else will diminish.

So, we love to write? We can love our readers too. We can hope that we might inspire or motivate somebody else to make the strides they’ve been praying for in their own lives.

And maybe, just maybe we can help someone over a rough patch. It sounds like a good plan to me.
