The Gunfight Outside my Window

Or how my wife and I dodged some Bullets

I was sitting in front of my computer cursing writer’s block when my wife and I heard the gunshots. We went outside to see what was going on.

The cops were already onsite. The kid that did the shooting was in custody and the victim transported to the Hospital. The property manager is a friend so I went to see if she was okay.

The manager and maintenance man who is also a friend were in the office where a round had went through the door. If she or the maintenance man had been outside her office one or both of them would have been shot.

They were shaken up but they were fine.

the shooter was a juvenile. Why does a child have a gun? and where were his parents? I don’t understand how people live that way.

In the eighties I took a meat-cutting class. It was a Federal job program. I was one of three white people in the class. The rest were young black people from low income areas.

I will never forget the day we were sitting around talking because the meat was cut and we had no customers. The two black guys were laughing and talking about the gun-battles they survived.

One of them took off his shirt to show off the scars from the gun fights and knife fights he had been in.

He was laughing and joking about it quite pleased with himself. I have never understood that kind of life. When I was homeless I saw people willing to fight and kill or be killed over any slight real or imagined.

It’s all so senseless. My wife and I pray that we can afford to move soon and that God will keep us safe while we are hear. If nothing else I have a source for Medium stories so I guess that’s a silver lining I can appreciate.

Parents raise your kids right and kids leave the guns alone. That’s all I ask but I know I will be ignored.
