A list of top metal bands that put a boogie in your headbang

It’s easy to write groovy riffs and beats in metal. However, in order to truly captivate headbangers, the grand challenge lies in dropping grooves that leave them no choice but to bop while being starkly original in the process.

Many factors play into a band establishing their signature manner of grooving. One determinant is their home region.

A trained ear can guesstimate with general success where a metal band hails from based on its delivery — they have that New York bounce, that band has that Tampa grime, this band has that Euro sliminess, and so on. In the majority of cases, it’s unavoidable for artists to have their cultural influences infiltrate their writing.

It takes a special level of innovation to write memorable grooves, breakdowns, and beatdowns in metal because the genre has become oversaturated with them. It’s not enough to simply palm-mute notes in a sequential rhythm to a funky drum beat; you gotta give grooves a unique flavor, baby!

Here are the master chefs comprising my top-5 list of grooviest metal bands of all time, blessing the metal community with their distinctively delicious moshable goodness:

#5) Hatebreed

My natural inclination was to place Sepultura in this slot, but they settled into their touted tribal groove pocket during a specific period from 1989–1996, spanning only four albums out of sixteen (and counting). Hatebreed, on the other hand, have built a legacy revolving around their walloping breakdowns dating back to the band’s inception.

Hatebreed embodies an effective “less is more” approach to being revered songwriters by concocting short songs that get right to the devastating point. And even though their riffs lack technicality and melody, they hit with maximum impact because they’re arranged superbly. Vocalist Jamey Jasta also plays a huge role in cranking up the urgency of Hatebreed’s grooves through his catchy patterns and energetic yells.

#4) Black Sabbath

One could legitimately argue that all metal bands are derivative of Black Sabbath. From Tony Iommi’s de-tuned guitar scale to the entire band’s dark imagery, Sabbath birthed the template for heavy metal riffage. They are also groovy as all hell.

Their classic riffs are ultimate toe-tappers and headbangers. The dark lord itself couldn’t drum up better hoof-stompers if it tried. Leave it to Ozzy and the crew to add a boogie into exploring evil and madness.

#3) Pantera

The good ol’ cowboys from Hell channeled their Sabbath influence and wrote trademark grooves for days that were laced with hardcore Southern flare. Not only were Dimebag Darrell’s riffs biscuits & gravy, but they also possessed an erotic characteristic; maybe I’m attributing that to the “Cemetary Gates” nipple-shocking sex scene in Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight.

Nevertheless, with Vinny Paul’s fluid drumming gelling to perfection with his brother’s iconic guitar playing and Rex Brown’s flowing bass lines, Pantera presented an identifiable groove all its own.

#2) Dying Fetus

With all due respect to Death, Suffocation, and Obituary, I declare Dying Fetus the grooviest death metal band ever. Guitarist/vocalist John Gallagher is a wizard when it comes to writing enchantingly rhythmic and historic riffs. On top of that, you have the band’s lyrical themes ranging from politics to anthropology to straight-up gore, causing their instrumentation to emanate a guerrilla warfare vibe — beating to the pulse of a jungle battlefield even though they’re from DC, but you get the gist.

#1) Irate

Not the faux I.R.A.T.E. — the whack nu-metal band from California — but the one and only IRATE from the Boogie Down Bronx, New York. No metal band exuded more urban panache and hip-hop cadence than them, staking their claim on a rump-shaking run from 1995–2006. Biohazard can surely give them a run for their money, but Irate, hands down, is the grooviest metal band ever.

In his prime, vocalist Phil Vibez had a violent growl that would vibrate the room — the most powerful live voice I’ve ever witnessed. Along with his veracity came a lyrical flow that transported you to ruckus popping off on Grand Concourse & Burnside. Guitarists Nando Redrum and Nick Ruiz conjured groovy riffs from between the depths and New York City, while drummer UV Rayz created bombastic beats of purely furious groove.
