The Great ‘Buy Me A Coffee Debate’
Do you consider writers who ask for tips bums?

When I lived in Lafayette, Louisiana, there was a man who’d play his saxophone in a parking lot near the highway. He left his saxophone case on the ground in case anyone wanted to leave him a tip. He wasn’t begging, just leaving the case there in case anyone wanted to give him a tip. He wasn’t forcing anyone to pay him, but the suggestion was there. He was only using his art to earn tips and entertain the public, but I’m sure at least one person criticized him for doing so.
Recently, I’ve stumbled upon dozens of articles complaining about sites like Buy Me a Coffee or Kofi. The writers of these articles were extremely bothered that a writer was using these sites to gain tips. The people who write these articles often have something negative to say about those who dare to include the link to one of these sites on their article. It’s almost as if they don’t want writers to get paid for their hard work, and I must admit that they’ve made me hesitant to share my own link.
Writing is an art that takes years to learn and practice. Many writers take creative writing classes or attend college courses to help them hone the skill. Aside from their formal education, some might spend time researching their favorite authors and learning what they did to get where they are. Many of these authors offer writing advice, which allows these writers to learn more.
Aside from the years of education writers endure, many writers write about their personal experiences. They may write about their relationships, their family, or even their dog. I have personally written about one of my dogs passing away, and although it wasn’t the greatest article, it was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever written. There were tears in my eyes as I struggled to find the words to properly describe my relationship with my dog that had since passed. My emotions were raw, and there was nothing easy about composing that article.
With everything that goes into writing, I’d never question any writer for leaving their link at the bottom of their article. Writing is an art, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting to be paid for that art. The writer isn’t forcing anyone to pay you or even begging for money. The writers who post these links aren’t lazy or bums. They’re providing their art, and if someone wants to reward them with a tip, they should be able to. In most cases, the link is there, and the reader can decide whether to click on it.
