The Great Backyard Bird Count

Four Days of Fun Beginning February 12th

The Great Backyard Bird Count

Want to get started on a new hobby? Do you love nature and photography? Birdwatching may be for you, in particular, the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). This worldwide citizen science project begins on February 12th and runs for 4 days. This can be a great introduction to a lifetime hobby that’s good for the soul. There is no cost to participate.

As an avid birdwatcher, I have been participating in and writing about Project FeederWatch, which runs from November to April each year. For Project FeederWatch, participants submit a two-day species count each week from one location. In other words, the maximum number of individuals for each species observed over the 2 days.

For the GBBC, participants submit counts for each of the 4 days, and checklists may be submitted for different locations. You can submit the same observations to both Project FeederWatch and the GBBC.

To introduce you to the GBBC, the following video will help you get started:

For more information, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology will host a webinar on February 9th at Noon. Project coordinators will share amusing birdwatching stories, as well as information on how to participate:

Observations from your counts can be submitted 3 ways. Probably the most common is to just go to the website, create an account, and enter your counts. However, you may also use the eBird or Merlin mobile apps. These are free to use.

Birdwatching is a great family activity, especially during the pandemic. So sharpen your pencils, dust off the binoculars, change the batteries in your camera, and get ready to participate in this important scientific project. In the process, you may have just discovered a great new hobby that will provide you and your family a lifetime of enjoyment.

I have started a new publication. If you are interested in gardening, birdwatching, or outdoor adventure, this is for you.
