The Grandparents Scam May Be Using AI

Warn others so they won’t be deceived

Artificial Intelligence or AI is the new buzzword.

Most people are aware of the scam which is being called “The Grandparents Scam.” It targets older people who may have grandchildren. Somehow the scammers are able to find the name of a grandchild and call a grandparent.

The older person receives a phone call or a text message from someone impersonating a grandchild who indicates that there is a serious problem. They might say they are in jail or have been arrested. They will ask the person to send them money. Sometimes they will request that the grandparent not tell the parents.

These scammers may be able to “spoof” the caller ID to make it appear that the incoming call is actually from a trusted source.

Scammers are now able to use artificial intelligence to make the voice sound like the actual grandchild. It may be close enough to fool the grandparent into thinking it is their grandchild's calling.

Writers are using AI in some of their work. Scammers are able to use AI to make the supposed caller sound like the grandchild.

What grandparent would not want to help their grandchild who had encountered trouble and asked for help? This is a very cruel scam which is targeting older people and taking their money.

There are people who have unwittingly fallen for this scam by believing they were helping their grandchild.

Knowing about this scam should help people to keep from becoming victims. People should tell their family members (especially grandparents) about this scam so that they can be protected.
