The Governor’s Comments Sounded Xenophobic And Racist
He was negative about a person’s name
The Governor of Nebraska made the comments.
A person of Chinese descent by the name of Yanqi Xu of the Flatwater Free Press wrote about runoff pollution caused by farms owned by the family of the Governor of Nebraska.
The Governor responded by noting that he had not read the article but continued to say “All you got to do is look at the author. The author is from communist China. What more do you need to know?”
The Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), the oldest and largest Asian American civil and human rights organization in the United States, issued a press release denouncing the Governor’s remarks as “racist, xenophobic, and contrary to the advancement of an independent and free press in this country.”
Because the United States has seen a big increase in anti-Asian hate and violence since the COVID pandemic began, it is alarming to Asian Americans that an elected official would make such a comment as did the Governor of Nebraska.
He was understandably upset because the article showed his family farms in a negative light.
The JACL expressed the thought that elected officials must be held accountable for their questionable actions and words. They are calling on the Governor to make an apology.
Yanqi Xu actually was born in China. This is information at the website about her.
Yanqi Xu (pronounced yen-chee shu) most recently covered courts and law for NC Policy Watch in North Carolina, focusing on criminal justice reform, housing justice, voting rights and redistricting…She hails from China, where she first developed an interest in telling stories that resonate with people, no matter where they are.
Even though the writer did come from China, that is no reason to disparage her because of her name. Americans of Chinese descent born in the United States could have similar names. People should be treated with respect instead of with racism and discrimination.
