BOOK REVIEW

The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Dare

A story of one of many girls living in Nigeria. It is a story of existence and little more except the desire to live. And maybe even thrive.

Adunni is The Girl with the Louding Voice. She is an intelligent girl who gets enough of an education at school to know there is more beyond what she has access to.

When she is removed by her father from school and sold into marriage, her education in survival begins. Her voice becomes louder as she gains an education to save herself and other girls who have no choice.

My Feelings as I read this book

The story of Adunni is inspiring and heart-wrenching at the same time. As I read it, I had to unpack my own privilege of being lucky to be born in a rich country, the USA, to white parents who valued my education.

When privilege is all we know, it isn’t easily recognised as privilege which makes stories like this one incredibly valuable.

I wanted to feel sad for Adunni, but how could I when she didn’t feel sad for herself? She felt challenged and energised to take advantage of opportunities as they crossed her path and to go after what she really wanted.

I felt inspired to be and do better.

Quotes

“My mama say education will give me a voice. I want more than just a voice, Ms. Tia. I want a louding voice, Ms Tia,” I say.”

“When you get up every day, I want you to remind yourself that tomorrow will be better than today. That you are a person of value. That you are important.”

“At first I wasn’t understanding him, but now it is not too much a problem. Everybody in the whole world be speaking different. Big Madam, Ms. Tia, Kofi, Abu, even me, Adunni. We all be speaking different because we all are having different growing-up life but we can all be understanding each other if we just take the time to listen well.”

A Favourite

It would be too obvious to say Adunni is my favourite character — for her wisdom, resolve, and perseverance, so I won’t.

Each of the characters in this story has a role to play in painting a complete picture of life in a place that is so very far and different from my own.

My favourite part of The Girls with the Louding Voice is the author, Abi Dre for creating this story and sharing a possible reality others live with every day. Thank you for educating me.

Recommendation

Every person from teen to senior would benefit from reading this book. The only way atrocities will cease is through education. We who are privileged to have freedoms and options can only secure our lifestyle by opening it up to everyone.

The Girl with the Louding Voice is a book that a discussion group can really dig into.

It is a story that a teen group could use to compare and contrast their own lives with.
