The Girl in the Mob — Part Eight

Fight Or Flight?

Working undercover for the FBI, Debora (aka Kate Wells) is playing the role of the mobster Marco Ramano’s lover. She is trapped in the home of his father, Gio.

An hour after the dinner, more people began to leave. Two hours after the dinner, the group had condensed to Gio, Marge, Sofia, Ray, Marco, and Kate. Kate knew she and Marco would be spending the night in the house.

At 10:30, Kate was tired. “Good night,” she said. “It was a lovely dinner, Mama Romano.” Marco was sitting on the couch, watching the TV production Yellowstone, which had been recorded on the DVR. It was his favorite show. She came up behind him. She hugged him and kissed his neck.

“I’ll be up soon,” he said.

In their bedroom, Kate changed into her pajamas and slipped under the covers. She waited while her body heat warmed the bed, and then she fell asleep. She wasn’t sure what time it was when Marco gently woke her. He undressed her, tossed her pajamas on the floor, and they made love. When she had first accepted the role as Marco’s girlfriend, she had been concerned this portion of the performance would be difficult. However, Marco had proven himself to be a skilled lover. She could easily send her mind into some imaginary lover’s arms. Kate struggled to keep silent as her orgasm bloomed; Sofia’s room was on the other side of the wall.

Later, she awoke again. She wasn’t sure what had awoken her, but she was alone in the bed. Sitting up, she looked at the clock: 1:32. She eased out of the bed, found her pajamas, and put them back on.

In the hallway, the house was dark and quiet. After using the bathroom, she went downstairs in search of Marco. She found no one. In the kitchen, she filled a glass with water from the tap. As she raised the glass to her lips her eyes were drawn to the scene out the window; she spotted lights in the backyard. There were lights on in the barn, and two men were walking towards the house.

There were no lights on in the kitchen, but Kate was concerned the two men would spot her silhouette in the window. She moved aside and peered around the curtain. She could not identify the figures in the darkness. As they opened the backdoor, she eased into the shadows of the pantry.

“Do you want me to kill him and dump the body?” Kate heard Marco say.

“Yes, but Tom can’t be the only rat.”

Kate recognized the second voice as being Uncle Luca. She was surprised to hear him; he had been one of the first to leave after dinner. Clearly, he had only gone as far as the barn. Kate’s pulse raced as she realized the significance of their brief conversation. Tom had been unmasked; they knew he was a cop. This explained why he was absent from the dinner, and why everyone needed an alibi.

Tom’s in the barn, Kate concluded.

“I’ve been watching him closely, and he has not contacted anyone outside the family,” Luca continued. “There must be a second rat who passes information out.”

“The Hammer will get the information out of him,” Marco added.

Kate had no idea who The Hammer was, but Marco was clearly talking about torturing Tom.

“What about the girl?” Luca asked. “She used to shack up with him.”

“Kate? I don’t think so. She wasn’t with Tom very long, and it was a long time ago.”

“Nonetheless…” The implication of Luca’s unfinished thought hung in the air like the stench of a three day old fish.

“I know. I’ll keep her close. Tom will open up soon. Then we’ll know for sure.”

Kate realized she was already under suspicion. Tom would certainly resist naming her as his accomplice. He was the FBI agent; she was a simple civilian. It was his job — his duty — to protect her, but how long could he resist torture? Even if Tom didn’t talk, Gio would probably have Kate killed, just to be sure. And now, they had her trapped. There was no way she could get off the compound.

Marco and Luca exited through the front door. She considered racing up the stairs to the bedroom. She could call Agent Signals and report Tom’s capture, and the eminent death of both of them. But, how far away were the FBI rescuers? Agent Signals men no longer watched over her. Tom could succumb to The Hammer at any moment, and then he would be killed. Marco would kill her, and get her body out of the house as soon as possible. She and Tom would be debris floating out to sea within twenty minutes.

She reasoned Marco would be coming back into the house in a minute or two. If she went upstairs, she would be trapped. If she tried to use the phone, Marco would catch her in the act. She would die before Tom. The cavalry couldn’t possibly arrive fast enough to save her.

Kate didn’t have an actual plan in her head when she turned and went out the backdoor.

The icy wind off the Long Island Sound blasted through her thin, satin pajamas as she ran across the lawn. She could see a van parked in front of the barn. Doubtless, this was to carry away Tom’s body after the execution. If he gave her up, the van would carry two bodies away.

Kate saw the van as her means of escape.

As she approached the barn, Kate heard Tom howling in pain. Kate circled behind the barn so that she could not be seen from the house. Passing by a window, she saw Tom inside. He was naked, sitting in a chair. His wrists were bound to the chair arms, and his ankles were tied to the chair legs. He was covered with blood. However, the tormentor was still talking to him.

He’s still alive, Kate decided.

“I want to know what information you passed on to the FBI. Tell me everything, tell me how you did it, and I promise I will kill you and the girl quickly and painlessly.”

Kate realized The Hammer was talking about her. Tom must have already identified her as his collaborator. But, Marco didn’t yet know.

The man stood over Tom holding a hammer above Tom’s groin. “If you resist, I’ll hurt you.” He let the hammer fall, and Kate heard Tom scream.

Turning away from the grisly scene, she ran toward the front of the barn. The large garage door was open, and the van was parked in the road. The van had a logo on its side consisting of a cartoonish toilet and the words ‘Williams Brother Plumbers’. The rear doors were open, and a sheet of plastic covered the van’s floor. Two men stood beside the van with their backs to the barn. Apparently, they had no stomach for watching The Hammer’s performance.

Kate eyed the gaping doorway, and again she could hear The Hammer speaking.

“No. I’ve a better idea. I’m not going to hurt you. Marco is going to bring the girl down here. You can watch while my boys have fun using her. They will really enjoy her — while she is still so pretty.”

Kate imagined the Williams brothers, standing by the van, were her would-be rapists. Marco hadn’t known she was the second rat when she had heard him and Luca talking, but he must know now. The Hammer must have called Marco and told him just moments ago. Marco would go upstairs and find her missing. How long would it be until he discovered where she had gone?
