The Girl Child
The seeds of gender inequality are not sown by the government, they are planted in a girl’s own home by her own parents.
Gender inequality begins in a girl’s own home. It takes root when a girl is innocently but mistakenly deemed by her own parents as “A prized possession for another family.”
I have always wondered why most (Asian) parents consider their daughter a temporary resident in her own home. Or label her as a “guest” in the very family she was born in. This tendency, unbeknownst to the parent, is the first step in reinforcing gender inequality.
A girl child should never be raised with the primary goal of “Marry Well.” After all, that’s never a focal point in raising a male child!
You are limiting her life’s mission with this age-old tradition.
Raise her into a happy, independent, educated person, with the freedom to choose a like-minded partner that respects her as equal.
A girl child is not a liability for the family but an ‘asset’ to the world.
She is the bearer of the future generation. The way you raise her determines how well she raises the next generation.
The convoluted idea of “learn to unconditionally accept and fit into another family” is the root cause of many woeful marriages.
A girl child should be raised to speak her mind and taught the sense to know, wrong from right.
Elevate her self-esteem to not be subservient to her partner.
Celebrate her successes, both large and small, for a girl child ignored by her own parents, may think it is OK to accept less than from others.
Boost her confidence so she can stand up to all the narcissists and bullies in the world.
Educate her and nurture her talents. Help her recognize her worth as an individual. Not someone who needs a partner to feel complete.
The roots of inequality are never planted by the Government, the seeds are first sown in the very home where a girl child takes her first breath.
