The Ghosts We Carry

A Ballad of Time and Memory

Photo by Danie Franco on Unsplash

The mind returns, a restless bird in flight, To forgotten corners, bathed in sepia light. The scent of rain on cobblestones, once clear, Fades into mist, elusive and austere.

Faces flicker, once familiar smiles, Lost in time, like ships beyond distant isles. Softly shared secrets beneath the moon, Now silent, a distant, forgotten tune.

Those battles fought, with scars to prove their worth, Dissolve like smoke, returning back to earth. Victories that burned with blinding fire, Reduced to embers, their warmth a fleeting pyre.

I chase the fragments of what once brightly gleamed, Each memory fragile, a half-remembered dream. Yet in this resonance, something deeper resides, A potent wisdom that time no longer hides.

The montage of years, interlaced loose and tight, Yields truths concealed from younger, dazzled sight. The folly and the passion equal parts, Form the weathered mosaic of beating hearts.

Letting the past drift gentle as a tide, Each vanished moment carries us inside. Not a gilded cage to bind us evermore, But weathered wings, to teach us how to soar.

My reflective free verse ballad is about embracing the past.

This piece looks at how memories may fade, but they can continue to shape us throughout our lives.

Our good and bad experiences are pieces of a mosaic that can guide us through life.

Our pasts don’t have to be a burden, they can be a source of strength that allow us to grow strong, heal, and hopefully thrive. 😊
