The Ghostly Gatekeeper
A spooky response to the poetry prompt of gates/ gatekeeping/ gatekeepers
An ancient portal lies between two worlds removed by time and ‘twixt them stands a ghostly sentinel to guard the passage. And if ere a soul is tempted to traverse the vacuum between the realms, the Gatekeeper is charged with giving challenge.
In times of old, this guard was formed of flesh and human blood, of bone and marrow, ossein, muscle, organs and the rest. Yet centuries have passed and now he’s nothing but a mem’ry. No ichor flows in veins long dead — only spectral wraith is left.
But in the quiet of the wood, though you can’t see his presence it does not follow that there is no guardian at the gate. The time-worn doorway may look empty. You may think that ghosts aren’t real, But don’t enrage the Gatekeeper, or else prepare to rue your fate!
