LIFE, CHESS
The Game Never Ends
Returning to Chess as a Metaphor for Life’s Resilience

🔥🎯 “Help your pieces so they can help you.”
— Paul Morphy
Back when the ink on my diploma was still fresh, and my career was just a stack of unplayed chess pieces, this quote from my favorite chess player Paul Morphy struck a chord.
It wasn’t just about the game; it was a blueprint for execution in the most unexpected places.. relationships, work, hobbies..
Picture this: each of your skills, talents, relationships, team members — they’re like pieces on your chessboard of life and career. The knights and bishops of your education, the rooks of your experience, and, of course, the pawns of those small but essential daily tasks.
If you don’t set them up right, if you don’t move them with intention, they can’t move to checkmate. They can’t help you win.
✨ The game plan:
1. Knowing Your Board 🕵️♂️: Do you scout the lay of the land? What’s your scene? Whether it’s a new product or the dynamics of your workplace, do you have enough context before you make your move? 2. Positioning Your Pieces Wisely 🛠️: Are your skills and resources aligned with your goals. Do you move with a purpose? Just like you wouldn’t rush your queen out too early, should you leap at opportunities without groundwork? 3. Moving Together 🤝: Your skills, your team, much like chess pieces, work best when they back each other up. The knight and bishop combo? Unstoppable. Do you leverage your collective strengths (skills and teamwork) to be unbeatable? 4. Staying Flexible 🎢: The game can change in a heartbeat. A surprise move? A challenge? Are you ready to switch tactics? Do you prepare to adapt, pivot, and improvise? 5. Guarding What’s Important 👑: In chess, it’s the king; in life, it’s your core values. Whatever happens, do you keep your passion and purpose non-negotiable? Do you avoid the temptation of straying away for short-term gains?
The best part? Every move counts, even the small ones.. as long as they are intentional and forward looking. Sometimes it’s that quiet pawn, moved early in the game, that paves the way to victory. 🌟🚀
Personally, I had stepped away from the chessboard (and its lessons) for a spell 😅, but the game’s pull is strong. I’m back, setting the pieces, and eager to see where the next move leads. Game on!
