The Fuss About Period Leave
My personal opinion on zomato’s period leave
Last year, in August, Zomato, an Indian food delivery company announced that it is introducing paid period leave to its female and transgender employees. The company said that they can avail up to 10-period leaves per year.
After I read this article, I felt delighted that this company is trying its best to kick the shame and stigma around periods. I perceived this as a very progressive move.
But here is what happened. A famous senior journalist Barkha-Dutt tweeted this.
Well, I don’t deny the fact that it is her opinion and she has the right to voice it. What she can’t do is this. She can’t state her opinion as every woman’s opinion without understanding what other women are going through. she can’t speak on behalf of everyone. Maybe some women need period leave and she must have realized that.
What I don’t understand is how is zomato’s move ghettoizing women?
when there is no issue with maternity leave, why is there a problem with period leave?
Each woman is different, their bodies are, hence their pregnancies and periods. Just because a certain woman is not uncomfortable in her periods, doesn’t mean every woman is. Some may not need any period leave but for some, it may be an absolute necessity.
My periods are extremely painful and I have terrible mood swings. If I were an employee in zomato, I would be extremely happy with this announcement. I would avail it 100%. Taking a day off doesn’t make me weak or exceptional.
I would no way feel that it is isolating me or ghettoizing me.
In India, most women are afraid to utter the word PERIOD in public. Such is the stigma around this. What zomato did will break this stigma at least to a certain extent, well at least among its employees. Change starts small.
When you take a day off for fever or cold, then why not for periods.
I am not stating that period is a disease or illness. I know it is a natural biological phenomenon but it does cause a certain level of discomfort in few women.
So, next time, when you type your leave application, add the word PERIOD in the subject instead of fever, or stomach ache.
For achieving a better society, women should understand each other’s pain, failing which we end up assuming that dealing with a certain situation is as easy for every woman as it was for us.
We women often expect to be equal to men but never think about treating our fellow women as equals, never think of the challenges they face. Do we?
So, next time instead of expecting respect from men, let's respect our fellow women in the first place. Let us understand and acknowledge the pain of other women.
You want to receive something, try giving it first, Period.
