The Fun & Funny Fitness Bitch: Make it Fun, Funny & Keep it Real

Fitness Bit #3: Fitness can be fun — if you’re laughing

Four years ago, a few weeks into January, after waking up from a night of junk food binging, I decided to change my life and follow through on my annual New Year’s Resolution, “stop eating junk, lose weight and get fit!”

I shared my thoughts on Facebook — about how I wanted to get fit but that eating right and exercising was f*cking hard. I posted about how in the morning, I’d promise myself I wouldn’t eat ANY junk. But by the afternoon, a co-worker offered me a cookie. Bitch.

I couldn’t say no.

And I couldn’t eat just one. Six cookies later. No, seven. They were good. Real good. But, they were little — seriously — like one cookie could barely fit in the palm of my hand.

My hands aren’t that big.

My friends had a hoot reading my posts because they could relate and it gave me encouragement to keep posting. I decided it was time to create a “no cookie” plan and I posted my first fitness challenge:

  1. No junk food. (Even if the bitch offers me cookies.)
  2. Drink two liters of water daily.
  3. Walk a minimum of 10,000 steps a day.
  4. No food past dinnertime.
  5. For 9 consecutive days.

F*ck.

Could I do this?

I didn’t know — but that day, I reeled my friends into following my fitness journey. I needed to start somewhere, and that’s how it began. It’s only nine days, I told myself. Nine whole days?

F*ck.

It’s okay to poke fun at myself — keeping it real helped me pursue my journey without letting my self-doubt and perfectionism creep in, take control and lead me to quit. I still had self-doubt about whether I could complete the challenge, but this time I wasn’t gonna let it control me, and I wasn’t gonna be perfect.

It was fun laughing with my friends on social media, and whether I succeeded or not, their comments gave me a boost to keep going.

About the Fun & Funny Fitness Bitch series

I’m f*cking fun when I’m fit — but way more fun than funny. I don’t do stand-up comedy, but I can hold a 90-second crow pose without falling on my face.

For 2023, my personal fitness challenge is sharing bits and pieces of my fun and funny fitness adventures that I hope will resonate with readers by making them laugh, cry, nod, or inspire them to start their own fitness journeys. Find all stories in the series to date here.

About once a week, I’ll publish an article that offers either a quick tip, advice, or insight into the various challenges I’ve embraced and how I dealt with my self-doubt and fears or will talk about my current fitness escapades.

Sometimes I’ll bitch about stuff (too many jumping jacks, not enough cookies!), but I’m not a real bitch.

This series was inspired by my fitness article, How to Tame the Envy Dragon: The power of grit vs. the poison of envy, published in Better Humans.
