The French Nanny Who Was Tortured and Killed
Sophie Lionnet’s body was burned in the backyard of suburban London house.
In September 2017, in a close-knit neighborhood of Southfields, London, a concerned neighbor spotted her fellow neighbor having a bonfire in the backyard. It looked dangerous as the large bonfire was a bit too close to the patio, but most importantly, there was a horrible stench coming from it. One of the neighbors decided to take matters seriously and called the fire brigade.
When the firefighters arrived, they were too taken back by the stench but, everything else looked relatively normal.

Thomas Hunt, one of the first firefighters on the scene, decided to put out the bonfire for safety reasons but soon noticed that there were human fingers and part of a nose among the charred remains. The man of the house, Ouissem Medouni, brushed it off as a carcass of a lamb.
In truth, it was the body of a beautiful, young French nanny, Sophie Lionnet.
21-year-old Sophie Lionnet grew up in Troyes, a rural part of France where the opportunities to get a job in line with her education, Early Years in Child Education was scarce. When she came across a job opening in London for a French nanny, she decided to apply.
Little did she know, her employers were not as they seemed.
Ouissem Medouni and Sabrina Kouider
Behind the successful front of being a financial analyst Ouissem Medouni and fashion designer Sabrina Kouider, the couple had an unstable relationship. Often, Medouni would disappear from their London flat for months. Sabrina Kouider was described as a soft-spoken, glamourous mother of two. But again, behind curtains, she was volatile and prone to mood swings.
When her ex-boyfriend, Mark Walton, founder member of Boyzone, stopped financing her London flat, she was enraged and grew even more delusional. It was clear that Kouider was obsessed with Mark as she filed over 30 reports on Mark and accused him of being a pedophile with a fake Facebook account. Kouider even accused the boyband member of sexually assaulting her cat — but, she never had a cat.
The Torture
With her obsession with Mark Walton, a fictional plot brewed in her mind where Sophie colluded with Mark in plotting against her and Medouni. The torture and accusations progressively turned violent. She had to work long hours with little wage and little time to herself. According to Michael Croner, a friend of Sophie, Sophie always gobbled down her food, giving him the impression that she was either famished or she was rushing to get back to work. Sophie was also accused of stealing Kouider’s diamond pendant. She was not allowed to return to France even though her mother was sick.
There were 7 audio records and 1 video recording that went on for hours of Kouider and Medouni interrogating or rather, threatening Sophie into confessing the ‘truth’ that she was in fact in collusion with Mark. From the background of the recordings, it sounded like Sophie was being slapped during these interrogations. In one of the recordings, Kouider threatened,
“Think about 40 years in prison. Imagine yourself every day in a cage-like an animal.”
In the last recording, they had finally broken her as Sophie confessed to lies of having sex with Mark,
‘He came in the house.’
Mark Walton who never met Sophie before, later said,
“When I saw that picture of Sophie and how scared and vulnerable and haunted she looks, and to think she was tortured because of me, that haunts me.”
On the day Sophie died, Sophie was tortured in a manner similar to waterboarding as they repetitively dunked her head underwater. It was unclear what was the cause of Sophie’s death with her body badly burned, but during the post mortem, it was clear that she was tortured. She had 4 broken ribs, a cracked sternum, fractured jawbone, and bruises on her arm and back.
So, it begs the question, ‘Why didn’t she just escape?’
Sophie Lionnet was alone and vulnerable in a foreign country. Experts believed that Sophie felt so trapped and beaten down by all the tortures that it led her to believe that she was helpless against this.
The Trial
In the trial, Kouider admitted to ‘pushing’ Sophie around but denied that she abused her. Instead, she claimed that it was her partner, Medouni, who killed Sophie while she was asleep.
Initially, Medouni confessed to ‘accidentally’ killing Sophie but, when he heard that Kouider pitched against him, he changed his statement, mirroring Kouider. Except, it was him asleep and, Kouider was the murderer.
However, a key witness came forth stating putting both Medouni and Kouider in the bathroom as Sophie screamed.
Neither of them showed regret nor remorse during the trial. Both were sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison. Judge Hiliard said,
“The suffering and the torture you put her through before her death was prolonged and without pity.”
Sophie Lionett was returned to France and laid to rest.
