The Flame of Fools

A heartbreak sonnet

Photo by Bruno Sousa on Unsplash

It came with a fixed gaze, so feverish, As charming as the depths of Death Valley. Where beauty reigned yet rattlesnakes flourished, You preyed on the wide-eyed and unwary.

I stood ice-cold under the blazing sun. Was it the heat that’s making me dizzy? As you shifted closer, I should have run, Your chest on mine for an hour and fifty.

Drunk and hostile, the wind reshaped the dunes. A mesquite tree, alive but half-buried, Was like my face drawn to the lines and tunes Of your promises, empty and hurried.

The flame would not die that fatal season, Devouring what’s left of my doomed reason.
