The First Step of Reading The Bible
How to Study the bible series

When people start reading the bible, people jump straight into looking at the text, researching the background, or footnotes in their study bible, but there is a very important step we need to take before we go into all of these steps.
We need to first take time to listen to ourselves.
We need to first be aware of what we are bringing to the text. This isn’t something done just once but done constantly as we read scripture.
Why?
When we are unaware of ourselves, we are unable to know what impacts our reading of scripture.
We may think we are simply reading the text of scripture, but our backgrounds, histories, personalities, and culture impact what we see, how we interpret, and how we apply scripture.
For example, as a Korean American who grew up in Alaska, the theme of liberation never registered for me.
When I read the Exodus story about how the people of Israel were enslaved in Egypt, I automatically made it into a spiritual issue. God liberated the people of Israel from slavery and what we were to take away as Christians today was that God liberates people from the slavery of sin.
But for people who have directly experienced oppression and need liberation, the exodus story would have been read differently. Their context allows them to see aspects of the story that I may have missed out on.
Awareness of my context will help me read the bible out of my context but also understand that my reading is not the only reading.
There is much to learn from others in other communities about what they see in scripture, and how they interpret and apply.
How can we be more aware of ourselves?
Thinking through these four areas of our lives can help us understand what lenses we may be reading the bible through.
Our own experiences
Our religious traditions
Our culture
Our education
We are shaped by these areas of our lives. When we come to the text we come with questions, issues, and concerns that are formed through our experiences. When we are more aware of what we bring to the table, we can be more aware of what impacts our reading and read to hear what God is saying to us in our context.
