The Fire Inside: Did You Just Call Me a Hindu?

One day when my little brother was 6 years old he came home from school crying and said, ‘Sissy, this boy in my class keeps calling me a Hindu.’ I said, ‘Did you say thank you, Booboos?’ With a quizzical look on his face he asked, ‘Thank you?’ in a confused tone. I said ‘Yes,’ and paused for a few seconds, ‘Would calling someone a Christian be a mean thing to say?’ He pondered for a second, ‘No, I guess not.’ I said, ‘Exactly.’

Upon returning home from school the next day, the front door burst wide open. In an excited rush he yelled out to me, ‘Sissy, sissy, I told him thank you! He didn’t know what to do, so I said what you said — are you Christian? He said, yes? So I called him Christian, (he said it in a mocking tone), and then I said, does that make you mad?’ At this point I am giggling. He was all of 6 years old. It tickled my heart to no end to watch him as he relayed this story to me. He sounded like Mickey Mouse with his little voice. He had totally confounded his bully — problem solved! He said, ‘It worked sissy!’ and he ran over and wrapped his tiny little arms around me. Be still my heart. He was so proud of himself. I was proud of him too.
