The Fight You Should Have to Be Yourself
The Power of Choice
Sometimes, it is easier to let others decide for us. In fact, it is literally easier. Imagine being in a canoe without paddles, where the river current dictates our movement. We are not paddling; we are just sitting. Yet, as human beings, we possess a unique capability: the power of choice. But why surrender it? This power, through thinking, selecting from different options, and then deciding which path to follow in our life’s river, is a fascinating one.

The failure to exercise this power means abdicating personal control over your own thought world. This signifies surrendering your whole life to somebody else. Remember, our life is just thoughts. Each of us has an individual inner world of thoughts, a unique conception of reality constructed by our inheritance, behavior, and experiences.

Suppose the world were a massive puzzle, with each human being representing one piece. We all add our own meaning to these eight billion pieces, creating a wonderful picture at the end. Otherwise, the puzzle would be missing something if one of those pieces were copied or replicated. As we connect to others’ lives with our meaning, they connect with us through their unique meanings as well, completing the great and ultimate meaning of life.

While keeping ours intact, it’s still alright to be together with other people’s thought worlds. The danger lies in losing hold over our own thought world. It’s great to be inspired by those who pass through our lives; however, everything must be done within limits so that their puzzle pieces do not end up completely remolding ours, turning ours into an insignificant part among many.

We should therefore critically select the puzzle pieces that interact with ours. Such pieces should enhance rather than compromise our individuality. The first step is to realize that what we see isn’t always all there is. This applies to views on Earth and, in particular, to earth views not only from my perspective but from everyone else’s too, since they are diverse. This broadens my aspect concerning how I view the whole situation around humans, including myself. Just like mine is valid, why shouldn’t everyone else’s be? When we finally realize this, we will stop feeling the need to adjust our piece to match others’. We will stop trying to absorb other people’s pieces, and they will not be able to shape ours passively.

Only when we recognize that the world exists in seven billion different forms, can we begin to take charge of our own. Therefore, let us appreciate and nurture our individual thought worlds. By doing so, we affirm our being alive and contribute to the tapestry of human existence. Remembering that each person holds a piece of the puzzle, without which, the picture of the universe would be incomplete. So value your own piece and use it well for creating the kind of world you want to live in.
