PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

The Field, the Trail, and the Flower

Chronicles of living in Germany — Week 1

Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I’d get to live my life in Germany. It’s been two years since I first landed, and I don’t see myself leaving any time soon. There’s so much beauty in this country, and my favorite pastime is exploring it by road or trail.

This past week of May brought sunshine to my little corner of the world after back-to-back rainy days. But I don’t really complain about the rain; on the contrary, it makes me appreciate sunny days and skies with a vibrant blue when they come.

Sunday brought a cool breeze, fresh air, birds singing, and different shades of green. We decided to explore a trail a bit far off our way in a National Park. The hiking trail was around 9.7km (6 miles) with different elevations and terrains. A challenge my seven-year-old took in stride and proving to herself that she can do anything she sets her mind to.

As it finally feels like spring despite some cooler days, it was time to fill our apartment with some fresh flowers. The best part of living in Germany is the many flower fields you can visit to cut your own flowers (Blumen zum Selbstschneiden). A walking distance from our home, a family has a small flower field where we stopped for some flowers.

These flower fields use an honor system. People can pick up flowers and provide a payment/donation to the farmer who planted them. I’ve never seen anything like this before. The trust these farmers have in people, and how people honor them, is unique. Trust goes both ways. Most times people leave more just to make sure that they are paying the correct amount. It really boosts my morale to see someone trust me and risk losing money. It plays with your heartstrings.

The last week of May truly felt like spring arrived in Germany. It wasn’t as gloomy or rainy, and even though I love those types of days as well, nothing beats the sunshine.
