A treacherous journey before me lies. Dim. Foggy. The way ahead is unclear. Onward down this path I must travel, turning back is a choice I cannot make. Other travelers along this route I observe, but beyond my reach forever they stay. In the distance, a bodeful river I see. The murky channel doth beckon before me. Rapid. Stormy. The raging water stirs fear. Its impudent torrent I must cross, as other alternatives I do not have. I know not why this deathly flow, my future and fate it will foretell. Passage o’er this cursed water must I find. Through turbid fog, the ferryman approaches. Shadowy. Daunting. His craft before me docks. The punter slowly gestures me nigh, his dark vessel awaits my arrival. Payment for the perilous voyage must I make, as I place my only coin in Charon’s bony hand. A remnant of a life now consigned to the fading past. Across the angry river we slowly push. Rough. Foreboding. The river welcomes me not. As the bank of the distant shore approaches, feeling of relief, I can feel at last. The ferryman docks his ancient vessel, and waves me on toward my eventual destination. At last, the river Styx behind me now lies. Copyright © J.K.Hammond, 2023
